Felix lit up. "You went fishing while we were gone?"

"No. I bought a new boat."

Zachary had a point. There was no way to tiptoe around this. Ripping off the Band-Aid was the smartest idea.

"For you two," I clarified.

David and Felix started talking at the same time.

"We don't need one," David exclaimed.

"Why waste the money?" Felix added.

Celine and Isabeau continued staring at Scarlett and me, obviously thinking we were going to announce something. Funny how that wouldn’t bother me. What we had felt real, and I knew that when the time came, I wouldn’t hesitate to celebrate with my family.

“Oh, well, that’s nice, boys.” Celine sounded disappointed. It was then that I realized I needed to find out Bella’s stance, her thoughts on Scarlett being part of our lives.

Because I knew one thing for certain: I wasn’t going to let Scarlett go.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Chad

"When you're old as dirt, time loses meaning," Grandfather Felix countered. "Is it too late to cancel?"

I felt triumphant. My brothers snickered as well. It was a stroke of genius to have the boat delivered.

"Yes," I stated.

"As he said, it’s out on the bayou already," Anthony said lazily.

Felix looked at my brother. "You're involved in this too?"

"Yes, he is, and since we're fessing up," Beckett said, "so are Zachary, Xander, and I."

Julian held up his hands in self-defense. "I had nothing to do with this, but I fully support it. If you turn down that boat, I swear to God, I’ll personally sink that old metal rusty thing. I've thought about doing that a few times over the years anyway."

"You boys are stubborn," David said.

"I guess we’re a lot like you, then," Zachary said. "Listen, the boat is already out there and paid for. There is no way to return it." He emphasized the wordreturn. "You might as well enjoy it. It's big. Has plenty of areas for shade."

"Oh, shade would be good," Felix said. "We've been cooking on it lately. The sun's getting stronger, so I’ll definitely like that."

David shook his head. "I don't want to learn how to drive a new boat."

Anthony didn’t miss a beat. "I can show you. I tried it out. I specifically chose one that had an easy learning curve."

Felix and David still looked a tad unconvinced, although Felix had come around surprisingly quickly.

"I'm sure you can take it back. There's always a fourteen-day policy, or even a thirty-day policy of returning merchandise, isn't there?" David asked.

"Not for custom orders.” Okay, so that was a lie, but he wouldn’t find out. When something was for someone’s own good, white lies were acceptable... Sort of.

He humphed in response.

Felix turned to him and said, "Let's at least look at this thing. If we hate it too much, they can always resell it."
