Chad: Bella is very happy about us. And she loves the drapes.

Scarlett: YES. YES. YES.

Chad: I miss you already.

Scarlett: And so do I.

Chad: What do you miss most?

Scarlett: Oh, that's hard to say. Hmm, let's see. That gorgeous tree and the twinkle lights, the view from your living room, or possibly that amazing hot tub. Oh, and you, of course. I miss you.

Chad: Sassy. You have no idea what I’d do to you if you were here.

Scarlett: Oh, do tell.

Chad: No. I’ll show you next time we’re together.

That was going to be very, very soon. I wanted her back. I needed her right here.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Scarlett

"Is it just me, or is this a particularly crazy day?" I asked Joel on Monday morning.

We'd both arrived early, as we always did on Mondays, and it turned out that all of our deliveries were late for one reason or another. We’d been here for nearly two hours, and no one came. The crew would arrive in twenty minutes, and we had to start prepping lunch.

"Was there a storm or something?" I asked.

Joel rubbed his neck. "Not that I know of, boss, but some of our suppliers do come from outside the city."

"I'll have to get a bit creative. Please check what we have in the freezer to get things going for the day. And then we'll use the fresh produce for tomorrow or dinner. But if we want something for lunch, we can't wait any longer."

He nodded. "Yep, you're right, boss. I’ll make an inventory right away and tell you what we have."

"Thanks, Joel," I said, then yawned.

I went to sleep late last night after a certain sexy restaurant owner kept me up with messages, but I had zero regrets. Besides, my bed felt so foreign and cold that I had trouble sleeping anyway. Maybe I shouldn't have spent the whole last week with Chad. Now I was struggling to get back to the way things were before. I had no idea when I was going to see him next or exactly how we were going to see each other at all. We couldn't meet up after work any longer.

My heart grew heavy. What if that week was all we had?

But that wasn't possible. He'd taken me to meet his family.

After Joel left, I did my morning email check and groaned. I had an email from Simon. He’d changed his email address, so of course the spam filters didn’t block him.

I heard Mark was in New Orleans. I hope you didn’t fill his head with more crap, or you’ll regret it.

This guy was just unbelievable. I was tempted to write back that I never speak of him, but I didn’t want to engage, so I deleted his email and put the new address in the spam filters as well.

"Scarlett?" Joel said, face a bit pale.

I looked up from my phone.

"Oh, what's wrong? Tell me our freezers aren't broken or something."

"No. There’s someone in the front for you."

I swear to God, if it’s Mark again...But I couldn't see that happening, since he said he was only here for the weekend.
