"Not even when it's true?"

I pursed my lips together, on the verge of laughing.

"Bella,” he replied sternly. “That isn't right."

"I know, Daddy, but I'm not perfect. And you always say that no one's perfect, right? We just have to try our best."

"Our very best," Chad said.

I loved how gentle he was with her even when he was correcting her. Finally, I rose to my feet as Bella turned around and pointed at the TV.

"Okay, can we start the movie now?"

"What's the rush?" he asked.

She looked at him over her shoulder and said, "We don't want you to change your mind."

That time, Ididburst out laughing. I couldn't fight it anymore.

"Your daughter goes toe-to-toe with you, doesn't she?" I asked.

Chad nodded. "Apparently so."

"Comeon, Dad,” she insisted, then turned to me, a big grin on her face. “Thank you, Scarlett, for convincing him. After today, he won't be a Muggle anymore."

Chapter Thirty-One

Chad

Over the next few weeks, Bella insisted on baking with Scarlett every morning, and I gave in. How could I not? Then again, I was giving in to a lot of things lately. Guess who ended up watching the first threeHarry Pottermovies? That's right, me. They weren't as bad as I’d expected, but I couldn't muster Bella's or Scarlett's enthusiasm.

The week of Bella’s competition, I got a phone call from Sarah as I stepped inside my office. I knew something was wrong before I even picked up because she never called.

“Good morning,” I said, putting the phone to my ear. I didn’t bother sitting down.

“Hey,” Sarah said. “Listen, I want to talk to you about Bella’s competition. I need to go to LA for a party this Friday.”

I blinked. “What the hell?”

“Spare me, okay. Do you know how much my socialite profile will improve if I go? It’s basically work.”

“You could’ve just said no.”

“Bella won’t even miss me.” That was unfortunately very true. She rarely showed up at school events. “Besides, Scarlett will be there.”

“What’s that’s supposed to mean?”

“Nothing bad. I’m impressed, though. I didn't think it would go this far."

"Thank you for the vote of confidence," I said sarcastically. "Have you told Bella yet?"

"I just found out. However, I will tell her when I pick her up from school this evening."

"Anything else?" I asked.

"You’re particularly flippant with me today," she said.

"I just don't understand. Why don't you want to be more involved in Bella's life?"
