She rolled her eyes, and I wanted to lean over the table and kiss her sassy mouth. "No, in the morning. Of course it's at night. Who would do a haunted tour during the day?"

"Scarlett," I said slowly, "New Orleans is not Seattle."

"I know that."

"I don't think you do. I don't want to sound pedantic or something, but going through the city at night is dangerous, especially in areas like... Wait, you're going to a cemetery?" I asked, glancing at her phone.

"Of course. St. Louis Cemetery is a staple for any haunted tour of the city."

"Jesus. What exactly do people expect to see there? At most, you'll have drunkards or drug addicts.”

She tucked her phone away. "You’re no fun, you know that?"

I started to laugh.

"What?" she asked.

"I don't think anyone's ever said that to my face."

She put her hand over her mouth. "I'm sorry. I keep forgetting that you’re my boss."

“I’m the owner of the restaurant, but not your boss. The chef is the boss in the kitchen.”

Her grin was brilliant. “That’s right.”

I put my elbows on the table, leaning in even more. "Scarlett, there has to be a haunted tour during the day too."

"Chad... I appreciate your concern, but I’m going tonight.”

Her determination was admirable—and misplaced. And I knew I couldn’t change her mind. So I decided to do something else entirely.

"Do they have another spot? I'm coming with you."

Her eyes widened. "Why?"

I had no explanation. Zero. "I've never been on a haunted tour." That actually was true. "And I don't like the thought of you going alone."

She tilted her head slightly. "I'm going with a group."

"I meant I don't want you to be alone in the group. Who knows what kind of weirdos will join."

"My type of weirdos, probably." She was clearly fighting a smile now. I wanted to kiss this woman more than anything else.

I quickly sat back, as there was a real risk I’d do so right now. "For my peace of mind, I'm going to come with you and keep you safe." She pushed a strand of hair behind her ear, and I wondered if it was a nervous gesture. Was I making her nervous? I hated the thought of that. "Unless you don't want me to come."

She hesitated for a split second. A whiff of her perfume reached me. I had no idea what it was. It smelled like vanilla and cinnamon from the kitchen, but underneath that, I could still smell her, and she was fucking delicious.

"I want you to join me," she murmured. Then she looked at her phone, tapping the screen a few times. "All right, it's booked."

"Perfect, I can’t wait. We’ll have a great time tonight, Scarlett."

"You promise? Because if you hijack the tour—”

“I promise.”

She held my gaze for a few seconds before looking away. The temptation to kiss her intensified.

I wasn’t going to be able to fight it tonight.
