"Honestly, I don't know. It was a bit bizarre. He said he wanted to check out the food."

"And take you out for a drink."

I looked at him intently, but it wasn't easy to read his expression. The lamppost cast the light right behind him, and his face was hidden in shadows.

"You knew your ex was coming to visit and you didn't say anything?"

I blinked. "What are you talking about? My ex?" And then it dawned on me. "Oh my God, you're jealous." I grinned.

Chad stepped forward, wearing a full-on frown. "This is not funny."

"I'm sorry, but it is." He was jumping to conclusions, but I loved that he cared about me so much.

I wanted to kiss him right here in the middle of Royal Street. But nope, I kept my impulses in check and even grabbed my hands behind my back to resist the urge to touch this delicious man.

"I can see how you got confused. My ex was the chef, Simon, and I was the sous-chef. That's why I referred to him as my boss. But that was actually theownerof the restaurant. I guess he’s the Seattle version of you."

He growled. "There is no other version of me."

"Isolike this."

"What, torturing me?" he asked.

My smile fell. I stepped to the side, grabbing one of his arms with both hands and pulling him into our alley. "No, of course I don't like torturing you. I just think that it... I don't know. It was cute to see you jealous, I guess. It made me feel special."

"So he's not your ex?" Chad continued.

I could see the tension still hadn't left his body.

My, my. I have a lot of work ahead of me tonight.

"No."

"Then what was he doing here?"

"Beats me," I admitted. "I saw the man every day at work. He was always in the restaurant, but we didn't have a friendly relationship or any kind of relationship."

"He wanted you to go out for drinks."

I swallowed hard. "I know, Chad. I heard him, and I still don't know what he wanted, but I turned him down. Anyway, I'm sure he can make plenty of other plans with his family."

For the first time since I saw Chad, he visibly relaxed. All the muscles in his face somehow became loosened, and his shoulders dropped. "He's here with his family?"

Holy shit.He really thought my old boss had come here to hit on me and take me out for a drink. No, this simply wouldn't do. I had to show him that he was the only man for me. The absolute only one.

But I needed to get home for that, or we might make spectacles of ourselves.

"Chad," I said slowly, "I think you've got the wrong impression here. Why would you jump to such conclusions?"

He ran his fingers through his hair, shaking his head and looking at his feet before finally focusing on me. "I honestly don't know."

"Hmm," I said.

"I just... I've been out here, watching you talk with him for some time. First I thought he was just a client complaining, but then I realized you knew him. And when he walked out with you and asked about the drinks... I don't know."

"Well, well. I had plans tonight to spoil you anyway, but now I’ll have to double down."

"Wait," he said. He took one of my hands in his, pulling me flat against him, and brought the other hand to the low of my back. "You're not even mad?"
