She put on her coat while I took the box out of the freezer, setting it in the sink, then grabbed my jacket.

Chapter Eighteen

Dom

Reese bounced up and down on her toes by the door. "Do you have a back door, or are we going through the front?"

"Let's go through the back," I said. There was a small trail, paved with stones, running from the back door all the way down to the lake.

"This place is truly beautiful," Reese said once we were outside.

For a few seconds, we were both silent, only the sound of our breaths filling the air. I took her hand, leading her down the trail. The decoration company had wrapped strings of lights around a few trees, and it looked great.

"I bet every time you're here with friends, it’s a party."

"I don’t really invite friends over here.”

"Then why bring me?" she murmured.

"Because I wanted to share this with you." I actually wanted to share more with her than I was comfortable to admit. It posed a conundrum even to me.

Deciding not to dwell on it, I kissed her hard. I was hungry for her. Her cheeks were already cold, and her mouth was warm, soft, and inviting. She moaned, parting her lips and giving me even more access, but it wasn't enough. Nothing ever felt enough with her. No matter how much she gave, I always needed more.

I deepened the kiss, but she pulled back a fraction of an inch, then yelped. I didn't realize what was going on until I noticed that she was leaning back and didn't seem to have her balance.

Immediately, I realized we were both falling. I reached forward out of instinct to the nearest tree and grabbed a branch, but it was more of a twig. Reese and I both went down. The twig cracked, and we fell with a thump.

She burst out laughing. I started laughing, too, but propped myself up on an elbow. Half my body was covering hers.

"Are you hurt? Did you hit your head?" I asked.

"No, I have good reflexes. I didn't realize it was so slick."

"Neither did I." The ground was frozen. We hadn’t gotten any snow yet, but the temperatures had dropped to freezing at night.

"Oh, Chicago, why don't you bless us with snow, at least, if you have this god-awful freezing temperature?" She gasped. "What happened to the lights?"

I followed her gaze. The lights in the tree next to us were off.

"I probably pulled something when I tried to steady us," I admitted.

Sure enough, the string was broken where the twig snapped.

Reese pouted. "I'm sorry for hurting your tree."

"Fuck, you're adorable. And freezing," I said in a stronger voice, realizing her teeth were chattering. "Let's go back inside."

"But we're not done exploring."

I helped her up to her feet and cupped her face. "You're cold. I don't want you to get sick. We have plenty of time to look around tomorrow. Come on, I’ll warm you up."

"Okay." She covered my hands with hers, which were quite cold.

"You don't have gloves?" I asked.

"No, but I have your sexy warm hands, so what would I need gloves for?" she asked playfully.

We hurried inside the house. She didn't take off her coat immediately, and her cheeks were really red.
