I cupped her neck, dipping her as I brought my smiling lips to hers. “Yes, ma’am.”

I’d never get tired of kissing her, not as long as I lived. For a long moment, I enjoyed that kiss for just what it was, with no expectations. But Jessa deepened it with the widening of her mouth, the sweep of her tongue.

I lost myself in her.

I was in the midst of pawing at her, one of her overall straps off and the other button in my fingertips when a truck pulled into the clearing and honked.

“Ugh, shit,” I huffed, setting her down before looking a little harder at who was honking. “Who the hell is that?”

She gasped, her fingers snapping her strap back on when she said, “Remy, I think that’s Bill!”

The scout. My heart jumped into my throat.

I nearly puked it out when he stuck his arm out the window and waved a contract.

Jessa screamed, and I whooped as we flew down the stairs toward Bill’s truck.

“Damn, son—don’t you ever answer your phone?” He smiled, putting the truck in park.

“Sorry, sir. We were painting and—is that a contract?”

“Sure is,” he answered proudly, handing it through the window frame.

I took it reverently with Jessa at my elbow, scanning it to find my name. The team’s name. A salary number, however small it was.

It was something.

It was everything.

The paper trembled as my hand shook.

“So what do you say?” Bill asked. “Would you like to play for the Mountaineers?”

“Yes, sir,” I answered roughly. “I’d like that very much.”

“Then look that over and call me with any questions. Have a lawyer look it over too, you hear?”

“Yessir.”

“Good.” He tried to stifle a smirk unsuccessfully. “I won’t keep you. Looks like you might have some celebrating to do.”

“Yes, sir,” I said again, reaching through the window frame for his hand. “Thank you, sir.”

“Pleasure’s mine, Remy. I’m glad Jessamine here convinced you to give us a try.”

I smiled down at her. “How about that—me too.”

He chuckled, shifting into reverse. “See y’all soon. Welcome to the team!”

“Thank you, sir!” I called after him, and we stood there for a second, watching him drive away.

And then all hell broke loose.

Jessa started screaming and Beau ran out of the house barking and jumping. I hollered, picking Jessa up and throwing her over my shoulder, running around the yard like an idiot, trying not to cry while she laughed and laughed and smacked my back with both hands like a drum.

“You did it!” she said, half laughing and totally out of breath.

I set her feet on the ground, grabbed her by her pretty face, and kissed her with my whole heart. I kissed her from the bottom of my toes to the tip of my nose, poured everything into her in gratitude and joy.
