Caught off guard, there was nothing to say but, “Yes, of course, Bobs. Good luck with Annie.”

He let out a heavy sigh and dragged himself to her.

“My, that’s awkward,” Mother said, taking her seat to sign the slip. “Doesn’t seem to be going well for dear Annie, does it?”

They were already having a quiet argument, and Henry had yet to sit.

“Probably for the best,” Mother said, moving on. “You look cheerful, Cassidy. Did something change?”

The way she could eviscerate you with a compliment was artful. But Henry was instantly forgotten, and once again Cass was so happy, the well-veiled insult bounced right off her.

“Davis texted!”

“Ah,” she said with a smile. “Not to worry, things will get easier soon. The day will come and go so swiftly, you’ll miss it before it’s even through, and this will be nothing but a happy story to tell.”

If my mother was going to say something else, the words died in her throat, her face flattening.

I was confused until I heard, “Morning, ladies.”

That velvety voice had said some of the filthiest things I’d ever heard spoken aloud, a handful of them just yesterday. My smile was absolutely mental.

Remy stood behind Cass, and I was happy to see her smile too, a promise that whatever she was feeling was temporary.

Mother offered little beyond a thin smile and, “Hello, Remington.”

“How was breakfast?” he asked.

“Perfectly adequate, thank you.”

Cass stuffed her phone in her purse and beamed up at Remy. “Grace offered to take us all to the spa today. You should go.”

He made a face. “A spa?”

“Yeah, get your dogs all cleaned up. I bet your feet are so gross.”

“My feet are not gross,” he assured her. “And I don’t need somebody handling them either.”

Cass stood, smiling. “Can’t wait for the game tonight. Maybe we can hang after? I feel like I haven’t seen you since I’ve been home, and you’re holding my best friend hostage. Well, you were.”

Remy smiled, but it was a little sad at the reminder we were separated. “Yeah, we can hang anytime you want. I miss you too, Squirt.”

“Sorry about the other night. I was just...” She waggled her hands around.

“I mean, I fake-kissed your friend in front of everybody. You were a little caught off guard,” he said.

“And you’re still enjoying yourself a little too much, but it’s genius, really. I mean, look at Henry.”

We all did. He looked miserable.

Cass sighed. “I swear, this wedding cannot come fast enough. I’m ready to be on a beach with a fruity drink in my hand. Preferably in a coconut.”

“What are you doing today?”

“Running errands with Davis. Which—speaking of, I’d better get going. Thank you for breakfast, Grace!”

“It’s my pleasure, dear,” my mother answered.

“Y’all have a good day! See you at the game.” Cass hopped on her tip-toes to kiss her cousin’s cheek before bounding out of the door like a kangaroo.
