His eyes lit up. “Try me.”

“It’s Memphis.”

I strolled to the door, giving him time to think.

“My fascinating Memphis.” His voice boomed with confidence. “You’ve made my night, my year, my life, contented bliss.”

I laughed as I walked from his room, and I was so caught up in my euphoria that I nearly walked straight to my apartment. Fortunately, my brain kicked into gear just in time and I pressed the button for the elevator. As I waited for it to arrive, I tugged the belt around my waist and did up a few buttons.

The doors opened and my breath punched out of me.

Needledick was in the elevator.

Chapter Eighteen

Oh farrrkkk! I clenched my jaw as Needledick’s eyes traveled up my body.

A creepy grin crossed his lips, and I wanted to vomit. I stepped in and turned my back to him.

“Where to, Miss?”

I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t breathe. Instead, I leaned over and pressed the lobby button, which was already lit up. We traveled the three floors slower than my arthritic grandma could shuffle with her walking frame.

I sucked in a breath as soon as we reached the lobby and strode away from the elevator as if I had the devil behind me. Actually, he was.

I didn’t stop until I was through the lobby, down the front steps, and out in the sunshine. I was fully aware that I was wearing nothing but the black trench coat I’d bought in Melbourne years ago.

In the blazing Gold Coast sunshine, I must’ve looked like a predator. . . or a hooker.

Maybe both.

I still had no idea what I was going to do. I couldn’t go back inside the hotel because if Needledick saw me, one of two things would happen . . . either he’d recognize me, and I’d lose my job and be irreparably embarrassed, or he’d ask me which room I was staying in, and he’d kick me out anyway.

The sign for the New Horizon Gym caught my eye, and I scrambled up the stairs as quickly as my eight-inch heels could take me. Dan was behind the gym counter. He was all muscle, very little brains. Much like Lobster from the first day of this year. Except Dan was sweet and harmless and as usual he was pretending to look busy.

As I reluctantly shuffled toward him, an I idea shot into my mind and relief flooded through me. “Hey, Dan, can you call Lolly for me?”

He cocked an eyebrow, and I nearly died. I’d completely forgotten my disguise. Shit! This would be a good test of my makeup skills.

I laughed. Actually, it was more like a hysterical cackle. “Sorry, I forgot where I was. I’m a friend of Lolita Bell, and she said whenever I was on the coast I could meet her here. She said you guys wouldn’t have a problem calling her.”

He folded his arms across his chest. “Really?”

“Yes, really.” I tugged my coat tighter, paranoid that I may flash my boobs at him at any moment. “Can you call her, pleeeassssse?”

He picked up the phone. “What’s her number?”

Oh shit! “See, that’s the thing. I don’t know. She said you’d look it up on your computer.”

He looked down his nose at me.

“Come on, be a good guy. Just let her know Memphis is here, and I’ll meet her out the front.”

His eyebrows shot up. “Memphis?”

I shrugged one shoulder. “Yep, that’s me.”

Dan typed something on the keyboard, then he dialed a number on the phone; I hoped like hell it wasn’t Crime Stoppers. I contemplated taking my heels off so I could make a run for it.
