Niall’s voice. Conn always had guys on site at Stag, but it was always reassuring to know Niall had her guy’s back. Nothing to worry about.

“Aye.”

Footsteps again, descending this time. Whatever Niall’s question meant, he’d got the go ahead. More people, more talk, more whatever. It didn’t matter so long as she was there, against him, breathing with…

Someone ascended the stairs, more than one someone.

“Ready to trade?”

Her eyes opened as her senses froze. That voice. Evander. Shit.

“You wanted in on the meet, this is it,” Conn said. “What you bringing to the table, Vex?”

“Less than you if that tail’s in play.”

Fear. Dread. She’d been in the same room as Evander and Conn before. This wasn’t the same. It was the first time she’d been so open, so vulnerable. Wearing only Conn’s shirt, legs straddling his hips, her body was concealed from view. She couldn’t move. If she moved, if anything—Evander would drink in every drop of the scene. Every drop of her near nakedness draped on her man. What if it angered him? If he thought to challenge Conn…?

“I warned you never to utter her name.”

“Didn’t say it, did I?” Evander asked with a hint of amusement. “Nice of you to offer him charity, Princess.”

Conn tensed and her hands went to his shoulders. She wanted to calm him, to defuse the growing pressure.

“This is her house. Don’t disrespect her.”

“How much respect has she got? Bet she’s wearing nothing under that shirt and here with your guys… Like cheap sluts, McDade?”

Her stomach lurched, but her own upset took a backseat to Conn’s twitch of movement. She pushed up, just enough to lay a hand on his cheek and draw his eyes to hers. With a gentle kiss, she couldn’t do more to beg his restraint.

“Bed,” he ordered her.

Inside, she rejoiced at the instant sensation of liberation, but… if she left, who would remind him not to let Evander provoke him?

She couldn’t argue with him. Wouldn’t. Whatever happened, she trusted him.

With another kiss, which gave her cover for fastening some of the shirt buttons, she reversed from his lap, keeping the fabric closed over her body.

Going to bed meant passing Evander and the two men with him. Keeping her head low, she couldn’t give Evander the chance to further needle Conn with some wink or whisper.

Except as she was about to pass him, he sidestepped into her way. Not completely, just enough that with his Manzani goon at her other side, the path was too narrow to pass without contact.

Probably exactly his plan.

What an idiot. In McDade territory? In Ire’s kingdom? This wouldn’t end well.

“Touch her and I’ll kill you,” her guy growled from the couch.

“That’s why I hire muscle.”

A Manzani goon grabbed her arm. And boom. One instant. So quick it seemed like the gunshot sounded after the guy slammed into the floor. Eyes fixed. Red liquid seeping from the side of his head. Oh… Conn had actually done it. That guy touched her and now he was dead.

Reflex had taken her a good meter from where she’d been before.

“Who’s next?”

“Fucking asshole,” Evander barked.

Another shot blasted and someone else hit the floor.
