“What kind of thing?”

“Someone’s asking questions, an ally, but I’m wary. If I have to deal with—”

“I’m there. Girls’ night?”

“Yeah,” she murmured, fixated on the animated Tulip. “Just between us for now.”

“Roger that. I’ll call if I get anything else.”

“Thanks.”

Rejoining at reception, Daly fell into step behind her when she started her next mission. The idea was to see Steeple, but avoiding Tulip would be impossible.

And, yes, the second Tulip saw her, she became a wolf on the hunt.

“Hang back,” she murmured to Daly from the corner of her mouth.

He stopped while she carried on to meet a guarded, yet confident, Tulip.

“Sersha, hi. How are you doing?”

Sympathy, both sincere and patronizing.

“How are you?”

“Oh, she avoids the question. How is your boyfriend? Ready to meet?”

“You better hope not.”

Curiosity glinted in Tulip’s eye. “He’s known for his volatility.”

“You don’t want to aim for Conn. The price on Nicki’s head, that’s your focus. Forget Ire.”

Tulip closed in. “You have something for me?”

“Maybe I can get you a meet.”

“Say when and where.”

“Stay by your phone.”

She wouldn’t call, not that day and probably not the next. Her experience as an investigator dictated it was better to be led on by a source with a maybe than ghosted by one that gave nothing. The former at least kept the reporter playing nice. Tulip wouldn’t step out of bounds while there was a chance she’d get the scoop. She may test the boundaries, but they could handle that.

Doing Steeple the courtesy of knocking on his door, she was already going inside when he granted her entry.

“How you doing?” Steeple’s sympathy swerved the condescension. “The memorial service caused a stir.”

“Oh, yeah? I didn’t hear about that.”

Her smile said otherwise.

He laughed. “You’ve got to be getting used to that. Drawing attention.”

She sank into a seat opposite him at the desk. “It’s easier to deal with as half of a pair.”

“You just here to check in? You know you can have all the time off you need.”

“I’m going to write it up.”
