“We’re expanding.”

“I heard,” she said, stroking his torso. “If only empire did it for me…”

“You never cared about the empire,” he said and her head shook slightly, her lips brushing his. “You cared about cock.”

She laughed, laying her hands on his chest to sit a little straighter. “You gave it to me better than any other man ever did… You ruined me, remember?”

“Aye,” he said, the need of his touch growing when his hands skimmed around to squeeze her ass. “Helps that your brother lives with you.” Her simple smile came as she relaxed her head in silent question. “You won’t hear me denying it.”

“You’ve been watching me?” she asked. “Or has Evander been reporting back? You share personnel now?”

“I underestimated what…”

“What?” she asked, scooping up his jaw to marry their eyes again. “You underestimated what?”

For a few seconds, he searched her. What was he hiding? Too much. Because there was still a line between them, a barrier that meant their time together was limited.

Capturing her in his arms, he flipped her onto her back, coming down on top of her. “I don’t want you to leave this room, this bed, tonight, you understand me?”

She nodded. “As long as you’re with me, I’ll stay.”

“And forget sleep, that won’t be happening.”

With joy, she freed her arms from between them to coil them around his neck. “You’re a bad influence, Mr. McDade.”

“Aye,” he said. “Anything you want in this bed, you get.”

If that were true, she’d never leave it and wouldn’t let him either. Returning to Stag wasn’t meant to lead to this. If she was honest with herself, this was the fantasy. He was the fantasy. Once again, he was bringing it to life for her. It was fleeting. It wouldn’t last. But she would relish every second while it did.

HER BODY ACHED everywhere. Her mind was heavy, tired, soaked in the endorphins of the night. She didn’t care that she probably wouldn’t walk straight for a week, not while she lay there on her side, head in the pillow, facing the man cradling her cheeks, pressing light, thorough kisses to her lips.

“Conn,” she whispered, losing herself in the intoxication of him.

Light intruded from the broad square arch to the living room beyond the bathroom. There were no windows in the bedroom itself, but that entry heralded the day she cursed. Even spending hours with him, having sex, talking, enjoying each other, it wasn’t enough.

His phone rang. Again. Somewhere on the floor near the room’s threshold, his clothes were scattered with hers, discarded, unnecessary, an unwelcome symbol of their responsibilities beyond that bed.

“Ignore it,” he said, licking her lower lip.

Wasn’t like they didn’t have experience shutting themselves away for days. If that was his plan, she wouldn’t resist. She could never resist him.

“They’re worried about you,” she murmured between kisses.

“They know where I am.”

She smiled. “Maybe I’m corrupting you.”

He pulled back to meet her eye. “I’m the corruptor.”

And that poured ice-water over the warmth of their bond. He sat up, disconnecting completely.

“Conn—”

“Stay as long as you want.” He got out of bed before she could make contact with him again. “We’re taking our business across town. Some of your things are in the closet.”

“Don’t walk out on me,” she said, stopping him just before he entered the closet. “Will I see you again?”
