“I understand. I just need to hear you say what it will mean to you if I take care of this.”

“The police are working on the case. Me and my colleagues… I want as many people on this as possible to get to the truth. Keeping up the pressure on the perp from every angle helps flush him out. I’m asking for your help, for your friendship. If you don’t want to be a part of this, I understand. I won’t be extorted.”

His desire only brightened. “Nothing gets to you,” he murmured. “You won’t give in… What did he have on you? How did he control you?”

“He didn’t,” she said, showing her defiance. “Why do you think I walked away from him?”

“You play with men like us, you have no idea what we’re capable of.”

She’d been in the room when Connel killed the man who hurt her. He had no limits when it came to her safety.

“I’m not playing. I am looking for whoever hurt my grandfather.”

“We’ll find him and then things will change.”

“No—”

“They will,” he said, straightening. “‘Cause I’m done waiting.”

He turned to stalk out and she exhaled. Done waiting? That problem would have to take a ticket. Evander was done waiting. Did that mean more trouble on the horizon?

Strat came back in with the others close behind as her phone rang. Taking it from its slot inside her purse, she braced when she read her brother’s name.

She answered. “Lach?”

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

“I need you to come home.”

“It’s crowded, there’s too many people—”

“There are reporters crowded outside Dad’s. We can’t work there.”

“And there’s something wrong with the precinct?”

“We’re not supposed to be part of the official investigation,” Lachlan said. “Working here gives us the illusion of separation.”

“Illusion is right.” Because cops and officials would tell her father, the superintendent, anything. “I can’t be talked down to right now.” If anyone tried it, she wouldn’t be responsible for her actions. “It’s best if I—”

“Dad’s gone. He’s staying in a hotel tonight. I think he needed some time on his own.” She could understand that. “Come home and we’ll talk this out. We should be doing this together. You have every right to know everything I do.”

Her brother she trusted. She couldn’t pass up his offer. “I’m on my way.”

WARY AS SHE ENTERED her apartment, she didn’t want to think her brother would set her up, but an ambush wouldn’t be beyond her father.

Lachlan was seated at the dining table that was covered with papers.

“You can breathe out,” he said. “It’s just me.”

“Where is everyone else?”

“Home. Gone. We decided to pick it up again tomorrow… Autopsy might be done then.”

“Grandpapa gets bumped to the top of the pile?” she said, putting her things on the counter before going to the fridge.
