“Something you’ve been doing for years and the guy still hasn’t got the message. McDade won’t stand that for long.”

That was a point she couldn’t deny. “Connel knows about Evander and his behavior.”

“And he’s cool with it?”

She wasn’t sure that was a phrase she’d ever use to describe Connel. And that was in spite of him being the coolest person she’d ever met.

“He deals with it.”

“He doesn’t feel threatened?”

Now that was funny. “Why would he feel threatened? My feelings for Conn are real. I tell him everything.”

“Everything?”

“There’s nothing I’d hide from him.”

“You’d tell him everything. Private family business?”

And there wasn’t a thing she could say against that when Connel knew things about their family that her brother didn’t.

“We don’t choose who we fall in love with,” she said and immediately regretted it, thinking about Imogen. “Do you feel threatened? He’d never hurt us, Lachlan. He’ll go to war for this family if necessary.”

“And if he causes that war?”

“Evander was a problem long before I met Connel.”

“It’s my job to worry about you.”

“It’s also your job to trust me.”

Their father returned as they held eye contact.

“What’s going on?” her father asked. “What are you talking about?”

“Tomorrow’s a big day,” she said, standing up. “I’m going to bed.”

The conversation wasn’t over. It never would be. Her brother didn’t understand, but at least he was reasonable about voicing his issues. The men in her life would take time to adjust to each other. She’d just have to do whatever she could to calm their concerns.

TWENTY-FOUR

TOSSING AND TURNING, the decision to sleep alone became frustrating. Though not frustrating enough that she wanted to get up.

On any normal night, she would, but with the memorial the following day, dark circles were a real concern. Staying up late wouldn’t make the event any easier. Where was sleep?

Rolling over, her hand sought her phone on the nightstand. Quickly switching to her recents list, she dialed and closed her eyes, head still in the pillow.

“Macushla,” he answered, amped, that much was obvious from his breathing.

An agonizing wail blasted her ear, opening her eyes. “You’re working? Sorry, I know it’s late.”

“Your text said you were staying at your place.”

“I am. Do you want to come over?”

Though her brother in the next room was still a factor.

“This could take a while.” Another scream and Connel’s voice changed direction. “Shut the fuck up! Interrupt my lady one more time, I’ll put a bullet in your balls.”
