“I figured. What’s he done?”

“What he always does,” she spits out with a shake of her head.

“And what’s that exactly?”

“Meddling.”

“Meddling? How?”

She lets out a long breath, her eyes meeting mine. “Swear you won’t repeat this to anyone? Especially not Drix. Only because he’ll side with Dalton, and then I might have to murder him too, and I rather like my brother,” she adds with an annoyed shake of her head.

“Okay, so what gives?”

“I was already furious with Dalton last night, hence the spa date on him, but now I’m livid,” she explains. “This morning he fired Lewis.”

“Lewis, as in the guy you…”

“Went on a date with, yes,” she nods, anger blooming across her features in a flood of pink.

“Why did he fire him?”

“Apparently because he wasn’t doing his job well enough! It’s absolute rubbish. Everyone knows he’s good at this job.”

“Then why would Dalton fire him?”

“Because he’s a prick, that’s why.”

“Wait, hold on. You didn’t mention this last night.”

“Because last night Lewis still had a job. Yesterday Dalton pulled him aside and gave him a dressing down. According to Lewis, Dalton said someone had complained about him.”

“And this morning he fired him because of it?”

“Yep. Lewis texted me, said that he’d turned up for work and Dalton gave him the push. No warnings, other than the one he gave him last night. Which, again, is utter fucking rubbish!”

“Wow. That doesn’t seem right.”

“It isn’t. Even if there was a complaint, which I know there wasn’t, there are procedures that are supposed to be followed. Dalton is an arsehole. He doesn’t like him because I like him,” Daisy says, pouring herself another glass, the champagne spilling onto the table with her anger.

“Why would Dalton fire Lewis because you like him?” I ask, trying to follow but failing miserably.

“Because Dalton thinks he has a say in who I date, apparently.”

“Okay, just back up a minute,” I say, sitting up in my seat as I cock my head at Daisy. “Firstly, if he’s firing Lewis because you like him, that’s gross misconduct on his part. Secondly, I still don’t understand why he would do that.”

“Because, like Drix, they still feel like I need protection from all the men in the world. It’s infuriating. I’m a grown-ass woman. I can go on a date with whoever the hell I want.”

“Yes, you can,” I agree.

“It’s complete bullshit!” she exclaims.

“Has this got something to do with that guy you dated back in college?” I ask tentatively.

“Drix told you about that?”

“He mentioned it.”

Daisy lets out a long breath, rubbing at her eyes before swallowing another mouthful of champagne. “It always does. Between the pair of them they’ve scared off four potential boyfriends. I can’t even go on a bloody date without them conniving together to mess it up. Either Drix turns up on my date with his chest puffed out acting all protective and asking all these dumb questions, or Dalton does something sly, like firing a person!”
