“I’m not, “Jason said, waving his hand. “I’m not happy with the way you came here, itfeels disingenuous. But it also doesn’t seem that you had all theinformation.”

“I don’t know why Brettwouldn’t tell you the truth about everything,” Cadessaid.

“He said I betrayed him,”Bella said. “I didn’t know the whole story, but I’m not sorry Icame here.” She squeezed Kash’s hand.

“What now?” Kashasked.

“What did your father say, exactly?” Jason asked.

“He said I had to come homeimmediately. Without Kash.”

Which had pissed Kash offto no end. Mates should not be split up, period.

“He said there would berepercussions, that I had to come home and face my punishmentbefore the pack.” She shivered. “I don’t know what he has in mind, but I’m genuinely scared to pieces to see him.”

Kash put his arm around her. Sheleaned against him, her wolf letting out a soft rumble.

Jason drummed his fingers on thetable. “I need some time to think. You didn’t mark eachother?”

Kash shook his head.

“Keep it that way for now. There’s no need to rush and it most likely would only serve to pissBrett off more.”

Kash and Bella stood, andso did the alphas. Cades came over to Bella and gave her a quickhug. “It’s wonderful that you two found each other, and a bonusthat your wolf felt safe enough here to come out. Speaking asparents with a child who made a choice that was tough for us tocome to terms with, the gut reaction is often harsh, but just giveyour parents some grace and time to deal with things. We’ve gotyour backs regardless, and you’re welcome here as Kash’smate.”

“Thank you,” Bellasaid.

They said goodbye and left. Kashturned on the truck when they were settled inside and looked at hisbeautiful mate. “How are you feeling?”

“Like shit.” She chuckledmirthlessly. “Jason and Cades are really great, though. My dadwouldn’t have been so gracious with a guest of the pack doing whatI did.”

“Your mom doesn’t have alot of authority? You really only talk about things your dad doesfor the pack.”

She hummed. “Jason andCades are clearly a unit and work together, even though it’sobvious that he’s the main alpha and she’s an extension of hisauthority. My mom has little authority in the pack. The femalesaren’t ranked and everyone falls under my dad’s authority. I don’tthink I’ve ever seen him let her talk during a meeting, let alonespeak on his behalf the way Cades did. It’s hard to believe ourpacks that are so different actually used to hang outtogether.”

“Maybe it was differentunder your Grandpa Jake’s leadership.”

“Maybe.” She sighed andleaned against him. “Since I can’t go to Rhone and probably won’tbe able to for a while, I need some clothes for a fewdays.”

“Let’s go shopping. I wantto take you on a date anyway.”

“Soundsperfect.”

He put the truck into gear and headedout of town to find his mate some clothes and see where the nighttook them.

Chapter Eleven

Jake Sullivan, formeralpha, and current bar owner, stood behind the worn counter ofJake’s, the bar he named after himself, and stared at the Saturdayevening crowd. It was mostly pack members, people he’d known for along time, since before they’d traded the dark past of Allen forthe new horizon of Rhone.

It wasn’t the same.

The woods were different. The game wasdifferent.

The humans who’d lived there hadn’tbeen as welcoming.

But he and his mate Renee had made itwork, had fought to keep the pack together and get beyond the deathof their son and the members who’d helped him abduct the mate ofthe Tressel Pack’s alpha.

There were some thingsthat wolves simply were not allowed to do, and at the top of thelist was fuck with a mate.
