“I’m sorry, Little one. Giving shots isn’t my favorite thing to do.” He pulled it out once the medicine was gone and gave me a pretty pink bandage with kitties on it. “Better now?”

I nodded.

“Okay, call me if you need me, friends. I’m gonna head out, Little one. It was nice to meet you. I just wish it had been under better circumstances. Oh, and these suppositories don’t need to be refrigerated. Let me know how you like them, they’re a new brand I’m trying.”

“I don’t need suppositories,” I insisted again, despite knowing that my protests were falling on deaf ears.

“Thank you, Elliot. We appreciate it.” Onyx ignored me, speaking only to Elliot.

“I don’t need suppositories.”

“Feel better, Emily,” Elliot said before he stood, shook Onyx’s hand, and left.

“I don’t need suppositories,” I argued again.

“So you’ve said.” Onyx chuckled. He stood with me still in his arms and carried me into the kitchen. “You know, you’re definitely the bravest princess I know,” he said, setting me on the counter.

I rolled my eyes. “I’ve cried like five times, wet my pants, regressed, wanted my paci and my bunny, sucked my thumb, and wouldn’t let you put me down.”

He laughed as he poured juice into a sippy cup. “Princess, you were arranged to marry a man at fifteen, escaped a cult, survived with your twin sister until you were legal, managed to get an education, became an kick-ass editor, started being stalked by a psycho, carried the burden alone because you didn’t want to risk anyone else’s safety, then got assaulted and almost kidnapped. So by my thinking, you’re fucking entitled to do any and all of those things. Cry, regress, have an accident, ask for what you need. You’re allowed to do all of those things. It baffles me how you can be so smart and not see how amazing you are.”

I flushed under his praise. “Thank you. That’s a really nice thing to say.”

“It’s a very truthful thing to say,” he corrected. “Not many people could have survived all that, Emily, and come out where you are.”

He held a sippy cup with handles on the sides up to me. I took it and held it in my hands. I was so thirsty, but I wasn’t sure what to do. I had been all over the place tonight. Did I want to add to my embarrassment by continuing to act Little?

“Drink some, princess,” Onyx encouraged. “I’m sure you’re thirsty.”

I tipped it back and put the spout in my mouth.

“Both hands, baby.”

Even though I could easily hold it with one, I did as he asked.

“Such a good listener,” he praised as he started to search through the cabinets. “I’m a little under prepared in the snack department. Would you like to have grapes and cheese or apple slices and peanut butter?”

I made a face. I didn’t want either. “My stomach hurts.”

“Yeah?” He frowned.

“Just a tiny bit.” I didn’t want him to worry, but I could tell that he was. I reached up and rubbed the worry lines on his face.

He caught my hand and kissed my fingers. “How about a bottle then? I don’t have any of the protein mix Elliot uses for his Little one, but I do have some chocolate protein mix.”

“Elliot has a Little?”

“He does, her name is Teagan.”

“She takes babas?”

He smiled at my word choice. “She does take babas.”

“How old is she?” I was intrigued. Reagan and I were usually the only “babies” in the Little friend group. It would be nice to have another baby to play with.

“I’m not sure about her age. She wears diapers twenty-four-seven. She has bottles andpacifiers, and I know Elliot feeds her at every meal.”

“So, tiny!” I exclaimed. That was so exciting.
