The girl didn’t object and dug in. She looked thin, and I suspected the pet store didn’t feed her properly. She needed to be healthy if I was to drink from her with minimal consequences.

Though the food was good, the blood wine was disappointing. The proximity of my pet made it harder to resist the urge. Soon, I said to the beast inside me. I craved to sink my teeth into the girl.

Esmeralda ate with appetite, taking care not to make any noise with her utensils on her plate. She stared at the wall and made faces as she ate, and I wondered what she was thinking about.

“Is something bothering you?

Her mouth opened abruptly, and she stopped eating, holding her fork aloft. She stared at me for a moment before blushing and returning her gaze to her meal. She ate quietly before continuing shyly: “I overheard the owner talking to a customer, telling him that pets were of better quality than bred humans. If he wanted food, he should go to the breeding farm instead.”

Her chocolate eyes pierced me, and I nodded. “This is true. Pets aren’t intended for food.”

She continued, “Then, I wondered what you plan to do with me.”

“Don’t humans ever have pets?” I asked.

She nodded, so I continued: “Well, then. It’s pretty much the same. I will care for you, and you will keep me company.”

She hesitated, then asked nervously, “Will you . . . Will you drink from me?”

“Why, of course, I will.”

The fork clanged against the ceramic, and her eyes widened with fright. I quickly added, “But not now. I want you to desire it.”

A traumatized pet wouldn’t be enjoyable. Plus, human blood tasted better when the human was willing to be fed from.

She frowned, and I smirked, amused by her sudden change in mood. I was already pleased with my decision to get a pet. She was rather interesting, and her presence filled the room.

“Do people really want to have a vampire drink their blood?”

The memories of the few humans I’ve fed on in past centuries came back. Evolution has ensured that feeding aroused humans, so our prey wouldn’t struggle. Oh, I remembered how they begged me to drink more—there was nothing like a woman pleading for me to touch her while my fangs were deep in her neck. But I wouldn’t tell her. She’d find out soon enough.

I merely replied, “More than you could ever think so, girl.”

She didn’t ask any more questions but seemed more relaxed as the meal progressed. Before she excused herself from the table, I asked, “Is the mansion to your liking? Do you have everything you need?”

She nodded. “Yes, thank you.”

“Good, then have a good night.”

I left her to return to her room and headed for the living room to take my mind off the call of blood. It was nice to have company while eating, even if she was initially reluctant to talk.

I was surprised to learn that she came from the werewolf pack. Despite my little knowledge of their race, I knew they protected each other. I was sure they’d come looking for her once they realized she was missing. The Alpha would send a few members of his pack. But since she was supposed to go to the elven city, I hoped they wouldn’t find her, especially as it would probably take several days before they discovered she wasn’t in Mytvathyr, the elven city.

I grabbed a book and settled in an armchair before the fireplace. I only needed a few hours of sleep a night, so I enjoyed escaping the world in a book when I could. It always helped chase away the emptiness.

A little after midnight, Judith entered the living room in a panic. “Master!” she cried.

“What is it?”

“Esmeralda’s no longer in her room! Her collar is lying on her bed, and her window was found open!”

My heart hammered in my chest, and I swore.

“Weren’t her windows locked?”

“Yes, but she used the curtain rod to force open the lock.”

I left the mansion without wasting any time. I took flight and tried to mentally calculate the time between when she’d gone to bed and now. I suspected she wasn’t far away. She didn’t know the city, and given the number of vampires, she’d probably run to the city’s outer edge.
