“Look at your life. Hiding from the world, making your gadgets and gizmos and elixirs as if you weren’t once the chief engineer of research and development whose creations helped turn the tide of the Rift Wars to our favor.”

I scoff. Those accolades mean nothing to me. Not when they have caused some of the highest casualties and death tolls in said war.

I deserve to be alone. Away from a world better off without me. Where I can’t hurt others, and where no one can hurt me. “You don’t understand.”

“I do. Very much so. Don’t be so scared of death, anyone’s death, you forget what it means to live.”

Chapter Five

EVERYTHING IN ITS RIGHT PLACE

Valiana

What was supposed to be an hour meeting flowed into several hours. Time flies by and I am still floating as I drive back to the motel.

I pull over to a gas station and text Nora as I fill up.

Hey

Hey!!! You got your phone connected already?

No, even better I met the owner.

And?

And I definitely got the job!

That’s a relief.

He says that I can move into the cottage tonight so I can get a jumpstart tomorrow morning. That’s OK, right?

As far as I know the budget is the budget so if we finish a day early then that works.

OK, I am going to grab my stuff and be on my way.

Yay! EXCITED for you!

It’s such a relief. Even though the motel I stayed in is affordable, and Nora promises it would be reimbursable via the agency, I still need to pay for my bill up front. If I can have a cushion in my account in case something comes up, I will take that option.

On top of that, I don’t even need to pay for food. He says the kitchen should be stocked with essentials in the pantry at all times.

With money from this job, plus saving a little on food, I’ll be ready with a security deposit as soon as I can sign a leasing application.

Everything is always working out for my ultimate good.

I speak that mantra to myself as I drive toward my motel.

Chapter Six

WHAT BIG TEETH

Valiana

I turn into the motel parking lot, and every nerve ending in my body lights up.

There are a couple of officers in the parking lot. The attendant waves at me. "What's the matter?" I see past him and notice that the door to my room is open. "What's going on?"

A figure comes out of the room, and for the second time in a day, I'm speechless. This Otherkin takes after a wolf. He's not as tall as Tor, but he can certainly rival him for strength. And he has those sharp teeth.
