“Did you do anything wrong?”

“Not that I can think of which was why I was nervous.”

“Well until you do something wrong it’s

Usually best not to think you’ve done something wrong.

“I guess that’s fair,” I say. “So what did you want to show me?”

He crosses his arms and despite his words, I can’t help but wonder that he is angry.

“First, I want you to know that you are safe here. no one can touch you in this town let alone when you are on my property. You are under my protection.”

He seems to want me to agree with him and so I nod and say “OK.”

The way his gaze and grows more intense, startles me. His eyes grow blue and only now do I realize that he is struggling to keep himself in his call every day form. Streaks of white ripple through the ends of his hair and I didn’t realize until now that he is a full head taller than he usually is.

The last time he was like this was when I came from the motel after that intruder.

“can you please tell me the nature of these messages?”

A flurry of texts fill the digital display, and I am horrified at them. They are some of the text that I’ve received from who I believe was Everett Over the last year or two. Most of them had been blocked and so they never make it past my filters.

But to see them on display like this is unsettling.

“Where did you get these?”

“The sheriff ran off a human male from Avalon Vale borders. From what he sees the person had a device that links to yours. The only reason why I even knew it is because of the chip I placed on your phone when you first arrived.

“No human would have had access to anyone else’s contact information aside from yours. And quite frankly, it is easy to trace the pings to your number.

“It seems heavy-handed to ask. But I must know. Is anyone threatening you?”

Chapter Eleven

THE OTHER PLACE

Torben

Twenty Minutes Earlier

The last few days have been utter hell.

I’ve been completely distracted from my work. On the one hand, I don’t care. On the other hand, the reason I’ve been distracted centered around Val’s safety.

Not knowing who threatened her has kept me on this side of utter savagery in trying to subdue my primal self.

I avoided Val as best I could. Only seeking her presence when I had better control. I always feel better when I’m with her and can relax in the aura of her contentment. But then the nights stretch on, when she is alone in her cottage.

I’ve taken to pacing around it throughout the night.

New snow drifts have piled up along the mountainside, covering most of the roadways. Even the mayor called via viewing screen to ask if there was any way the snows could relent just a little. The Firebirds and Sirens of the lake are starting to complain.

My response was an indecipherable growling threat followed by smashing the screen to bits.

The only reason I found enough calm to silence the howling winds once more was Val’s offhand comment last night about being grateful for the shearling boots the house provided for her. Otherwise, her toes would have frozen and fallen off.

Val’s toes are too cute to fall off.
