He got up, put my chair back, and walked out of the room. “Good night, guys. If you need to hide a body, the tools are in the shed.” His voice filtered down the hall.

“Do you think he really means that?”

I turned to look at Zeke. “Yeah. I’ve seen them.” A shudder ran through him as he opened up his magazine again.

“What would you do”—he put the mag back down in his lap—“If your mate was taken by someone else?”

“That wouldn’t happen,” I said with confidence. I’m an alpha’s son.

“Yeah, I know, you have girls dying to be with you, but let’s play ‘what if.’ What would you do?” Zeke pushed, and I decided to play along.

“Depends on who it is. If I knew them and knew I could take them without a doubt, I would just tell them to back away from my mate or else I would challenge them in the next Blood Match.”

Zeke sighed. “Of course, you would leave the fun shit out. And what if you didn’t?”

“I would be using Dad’s shed and asking for your help.”

Zeke threw his head back and laughed. “Yeah, that’s more like you.”

A gasp for air has me blinking rapidly as the memory recedes, and I suddenly start coughing as if I’m trying to expel something. My eyes start to water, but I desperately search around and find Rez wheezing next to me.

“Fuck,” she hisses and wipes her eyes. “That’s never easy,” she moans and peers up at me. “Shit! Knox, breathe,” she says as she straddles my lap and gets in my face.

“Slow down your breathing and concentrate on me. I know it’s a trip, but you’re fine. You’re here,” she coaxes me, and I grab her thighs and follow her instructions.

“What the fuck just happened?” I cough out, and she smiles at me.

“Well, I sort of slipped into your memory,” she admits with a smile.

“The memory I just thought of?” I ask in awe, and then my face falls as I realize she heard a private conversation between me and Zeke about mates. Shit. Does that mean she saw that dark side of me, where there’s a part of me that isn’t bothered by killing someone? I start to slide her down my thighs, but she grabs my hands, stopping me.

“No. I know you’re upset. I feel it, but we need to talk,” she urges.

“No, we don’t.” I easily push her to the side and slide out of the bed. I don’t need to be here, and I can slip back into my room across the hall.

“You know your father is wrong, right?” she calls out, and I pause to look back at her.

She’s kneeling on the bed, with her hands crossed in her lap and the saddest-looking eyes in the world.

“Humans don’t have magical whirlwind romances where they get married, have babies, and live happily ever after. They work their asses off to make it look easy. There are mistakes, arguments, crying, and laughter. But every relationship that works has one thing in common.” She shuffles to the edge of the bed and continues to give me her version of puppy dog eyes. “They both want it to work, and they both give 100% to that relationship.”

I can’t seem to look at her as shame engulfs me, and I turn toward the door to keep her from seeing my face as I fight my own demons. I’m not one to run from a fight, but I don’t want to hurt her emotionally either.

“Please don’t walk away because you’re scared,” she pleads.

“I’m not scared.”

“Yes, you are,” she says, and I hear the bedsheets move. Her hand touches my shoulder before she appears in front of me. She wraps her arms around my waist and gazes into my eyes. “And that’s okay, because I am, too. This is something new for both of us.”

I sigh as I wrap my arms around her, and she rests her cheek against my chest. “I didn’t even know dating more than one person or mates was a thing a month ago. Will you please come back to bed and hold me while I explain about Lynx and set everything straight?” She leans back and looks up at me. “To the best of my ability? I kinda want to cuddle.” She smiles, and it draws a chuckle from me.

She makes a good point. Even with Father pointing out that we need to trust our animals, we do live in a world where we do have to date multiple people. The only question I need to worry about is, are my animals happy with Rez?

‘Of course we are happy with our mate! What kind of question is that?’ Baron huffs.

‘Then why the animosity toward her?’ I ask my animals.

‘She has another mate! What if she wants him more than us? We did come second. She will leave me,’ Fluffers howls.
