As I approach the Crucible, I lose Trometh’s scent, noticing a crowd of Demons, and I figure there’s no way I won’t be spotted, so I shift into my ferret form and weave my way into the building between their feet, listening to their chatter.

“I heard Asmodeus has more power than L.A.M.B.”

“Did you see it? L.A.M.B. delivered his children’s heads on pikes.”

“Ugh. How am I supposed to get to Nova now?”

“What kind of explanation is go home?”

It seems not everyone is happy with their fearless leaders. Inside the building is dead, besides the guards doing their sweeps, and to keep from being spotted, I stay to the shadowy edges. There’s a larger area in the middle with guards surrounding the entrance, and I bet that’s where the portals actually are.

Damn!

Maybe there’s an area in the back I might be able to squeeze through to look around. As I hop around the outside of the room, I see a guard walking by, doing a sweep, so I enter one of the empty stalls as quickly and quietly as possible.

“Shh. He’s coming,” a voice whispers, but I don’t see anyone.

Am I hearing shit now?

There’s a heavy tarp separating the back from the front, and I catch the slightest movement, indicating someone is back there. Slipping through on the farthest side, I let my eyes adjust as I restrain myself from attacking the fuckers in front of me.

Crouching down in the darkened corner between a few boxes are Angel and Trometh. Or too much meth if you ask me. The harpy seems to tower over L.A.M.B.’s cowering errand Demon.

“Well?” she hisses. “Did you find it? Is there any other way out of here we need to block L.A.M.B. from?”

“No. But things have become a little more dangerous for me. They’ve already ‘cleaned house’ once, and I’m lucky to still be alive. They're in the library searching for another way, and you’re asking me to risk my life once again, so I think we need to reassess my contract. You know, sweeten the deal?” he states, looking smug.

“What do you mean by ‘sweeten the deal?’” she hisses. “What more could you possibly want?”

“Nut butter,” Trometh says, smiling shyly. Uh… Does he mean what I think he means?

“Nut butter?” Angel spits out in disgusted shock.

“Not just any kind. I want that fancy type. The chocolate nut butter type,” he says, his eyes light up with excitement.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“Do you know how hard that is to find on the black market? I would have sold off my niece if the guy would have taken her for the half jar he had last time.” Trometh starts drooling.

I thought I had it bad for spying at times, but this guy… He takes it to a new level!

“Ugh,” Angel flips her hair over her shoulder, and I internally laugh, knowing Rez would find it funny. Angel’s hair gets tangled up in the boxes and the material behind her, and it takes her a few moments to pull her hair free. Trometh does a good job pursing his lips together as he watches her struggle. Once she’s free, she throws a glare at the small Demon.

“Fine. But it will take me some time; it’s not like I have free range to get to Earth and get your stuff personally. Nutella, of all things. Pfft.” Angel shakes her head as Trometh nods his head. “And just so you know,” she smiles wickedly. “Father won’t be happy,” she spits out and leaves out of the side of the stand after making sure it’s clear.

“Ungrateful brat,” Trometh utters under his breath before he straightens his shirt and pulls back his shoulders. He turns and starts walking toward me as I slide out from the shadows.

“Eek!” Trometh shrieks like a girl before he sighs and rolls his eyes. With a chuckle, he lifts his foot as if he’s going to try to squish me. “Just another ugly rat species, too dumb to know when to die out,” he says with disgust.

I quickly shift back to my human form, where I tower over the Demon and glare down at him. “I’m not the rat, but you are,” I say with a smirk before I shift once more and lunge.

I hope he runs. I do love a chase.
