Rez

We follow Lucifer behind an open bookcase while I try to figure out what he meant about our search being ‘imperative,’ but I get distracted and I’m immediately thrown into nirvana. Bookshelves line the walls, and there’s at least five stacks of shelves on each side of the room. It’s more like a book oasis for me as I take in the massive area. Pillows line the sunken square seating area in the center, allowing room to walk around to the bookcases. There are little nooks and crannies everywhere, promising a cozy getaway. Glancing up, I notice fairy lights hovering over the room, giving the impression that this place is magical.

What am I talking about? Everything about books is magical. Though I’m sure some could bore me to death, but as I take in the scent of the room, all I smell is the hint of vanilla, paper, and ink. I wish I could bottle it up and carry it with me always.

There’s a table in the middle where Levi and Bez are already seated and looming over books. Moni is perched on Chester’s shoulder as both of them are looking over a book in the corner. Ryker is already in deep with a book, and Knox is reading spines overhead on one of the ladders. Lilith and Murmur are reclining against some pillows with a big black book between them. Something scurries across the back of the room. Squinting, I notice Benny climbing up a bookcase and working to get a book out. I quickly walk around the sunken pillow area and get there in time to help her.

“Need help?” I ask, grabbing the heavy tome for her.

“Ah! Thank you, Rez. Yes. I’ve been searching, and I think this might be a book of interest. I was going to give it to Lucifer,” she explains. “Would you mind helping? It’s quite heavy, and I wasn’t expecting that.” Her whiskers bristle as her tail wraps around her body.

“No problem.” I smile and take the tome over to Lucifer, who is making himself comfortable on a pillow and leaning against the table leg. It’s surreal to see the Ruler of Hell in workout clothes and bedding down on the floor to dig into a book. I bet people would literally die to see that.

The last of my guys, Zeke, JP, and Knots are lined up against one of the bookcases with their noses in books. Knots doesn’t stay standing for long and slides down the bookcase to get comfortable on the floor. I hope he’s just getting comfortable and doesn’t need to sit down. I can’t help but wonder how he’s holding up. I don’t see Lynx at all as I take in the room as a whole.

‘Where are you?’

‘Slowly contemplating my death. Never thought I would die by reading,’ Lynx grumbles.

I laugh internally and begin looking between the bookshelves until I spot Lynx leaning against the wall, his eyes fixated on a shelf.

‘Find something good?’ I ask, walking up to him. He turns to face me, putting his back to the wall and eyes me up and down.

‘I have now!’

‘Very funny, Lynx,’ I joke.

‘Do I look like I’m joking?’ he asks, and I take a moment to study his form. He’s trying to project a relaxed stance, but I know my bestie. The muscles in his chest and arms are tight, and as my eyes travel down his torso, I notice a slight bluge in his pants.

At least I’m not the only one that was affected by our kiss. It definitely wasn’t a kiss like we had when we were little. It was more feral, addictive, and I want more.

‘No. You look like you can’t concentrate and you’re frustrated. Both of those we can’t have if we’re supposed to be looking for something about the portals. So, I think I know how to help,’ I say. I walk up to him and give him my signature smirk.

‘What did you have in mind?’ Lynx asks, his breath picking up.

‘Let’s get your mind off of what you’re thinking about,’ I say, licking my dry lips. His heated eyes drop to my lips as his slightly open in response.

‘I highly doubt that’s going to work.’ He chuckles through our link.

‘It’s actually really simple,’ I explain, dropping to my knees. I glance up, and Lynx’s eyes go wide. I would laugh out loud if I wasn’t trying to be quiet.

‘What are you doing?’

‘Getting your mind off of it,’ I say as I grab hold of the waistband of his shorts to pull them down.

‘Woah, Rez!’ Lynx grabs my hands, stopping me before helping me stand back up. Disappointment and shame fill me from his rejection, but he pulls me close to him as he looks deeply into my eyes.

‘You have no idea how much I would love to have you choking on my cock right now. Because you definitely would be tapping out first,’ he says jokingly. I barely crack a smile and roll my eyes before he continues. ‘But I want our first time to be special, and I want no chance of being interrupted again.’

‘Oh, you don’t mind cockblocking as long as it can’t be turned around on you?’ I tease. I do kinda see his point, though.

Lynx snarls, and a laugh is ripped out of me. My heart warms, though, to his words and his thoughts. It makes me love him even more for waiting to wait. I lean up and give him a kiss on the nose before I turn and study the books before me.

‘What are we supposed to be looking for again?’ I ask since I wasn’t here the first time they discussed this.

‘Dr. Steinbeck read something about a master switch to the portals in one of these books eons ago. You know, before dinosaurs roamed the earth, and now it’s our job to look for it,’ Lynx snarks.

I sigh and lean against one of the bookcases, letting my eyes glance over all the books before us.
