‘Boo!’ the voice yells at me, scaring the shit out of me and making me fall.

‘What the fuck?’

Laughter echoes inside of my head. Fluffers is rolling around laughing while a new voice joins him.

Rolling my eyes, I hop back up onto the counter, prepared this time, and take in my form. First of all, it’s not black fur that’s covering me, it’s blue-black fur, and it seems to ripple as my muscles move. I am about nine feet in length, and my guess is I weigh about five hundred pounds. I have six legs, a tail, and two long five-foot tentacles that sprout out of my shoulders and are moving along my back. At the ends of the free-roaming whips are pads with sharp thorny barbs. My green eyes seem to glow, and I wonder how good my night vision is. My best comparison of what I’m looking at is a six-legged panther with tentacles and the face of a bat. It’s so foreign, I can’t help but wonder if Rez will like the new form or even find it attractive. He’s not really looking all that cuddly. A growl rumbles in my chest as my thoughts hit a sour note with my new beast.

‘What are we?’ I ask. I have no clue what I am bonded to. This is nothing like what I’ve learned in class or even in mythical creatures books. A thrill runs through me at the prospect that this might be an extinct or extremely rare beast.

‘You won’t find us in any book, buddy. I’m pretty sure there are less than ten of us alive, if the Elves haven’t killed us all off,’ the voice replies.

‘Elves? What do they have to do with this?’ I ask.

‘Well, here’s the short version. Once upon a time, there was an evil king that used to employ us to do his dirty deeds and clean up his messes. Then he decided to send his Elves to eradicate us so we couldn’t squeal on him. Over the years, we hid in the elven realm and only ventured out to hopefully merge our dying soul with another to once again live on. The end.’

‘So you died?’ I ask in utter shock.

‘Damn, he’s really not that bright, is he?’ he asks, and it’s Baron that answers.

‘Not even close.’

‘I take offense to that,’ I huff.

‘How? I didn’t think you were even intelligent enough to understand what I just said,’ my new animal says.

‘I’m just going to act like you didn’t say that. So, again, what are we? And what should I call you?’ I ask, trying to move past this awkward moment.

‘Fair enough. I’m a Netherwraith, and you can call me God.”

The room shakes, and my claws try to dig into the marble countertop to no avail. I slip off and growl.

‘Yea, no. I’m not calling you God. If you want those letters though, I’ll be happy enough to call you Dog!’ I say while another explosion from the blasphemy happens in my fireplace.

‘You already have one of those, I believe, so just call me Slayer. It’s what my mother called me,’ Slayer concedes.

‘Okay. That I’ll agree to.’

‘Good, now let’s go bond. I need to stretch my legs,’ he says, and I feel the urge to run.

Jumping off the counter, I use the tentacles to turn off the water before stepping into my bedroom and finding Reaper passed out. Well, I guess he’s not going to run with me.

I open the bedroom doors with my whips and very carefully close them, turning to find the hallway empty.

‘Let’s see what you can do,’ I challenge.

‘Aww, this is gonna be fun.’ Slayer laughs as we take off running. One of the pads whips out ahead of us, attaching to the wall and lifts us into the air, propelling us further.

‘Oh shit, what am I getting myself into?’

Slayer just laughs as we whip around the corner.

CHAPTER 48

A Whole New World

Rez

“Lynx!” I yell as he almost drops me. All I manage to see is his feet and firm ass as he carries me away from the library. He slides going around the corner so fast that he almost loses his balance and takes me down with him.
