“Hush. I was pulled here for a reason,” a familiar yet gruff voice says. White flames glow along the wall as heavy footsteps come closer to the partition. Within seconds, a figure steps out and into my view. This time, I let out a sob for a different reason.

“Rez?” Knots’ eyes widen slightly before his sword extinguishes and disappears. He swoops down to pull me into his chest. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” He quickly assesses me before I can get a word out.

“Rez?” I hear something heavy hit the floor. “Rez is here?” Chester’s blond mop of hair peeks over Knots’ shoulder. “Are you okay? Is Moni with you?” His eyes dart around the room. “Where’s Moni?” he asks, his voice jumping an octave, ending in a squeak.

“I’m not injured, Knots,” I assure him as I lean back and peer into his brown eyes, gently patting his chest. “I’m just upset,” I say before turning my attention to Moni’s mate. “Chester, Moni is in the living room with the others. I can show you the way in a moment… I just have to clean up.” I sniffle and try to wipe my tears, but it’s a little hard with Knots pressed up against me.

“No need. I’ll find her,” Chester says, and before I can stop him he disappears from my sight.

“He’s going to get lost,” I mumble against Knots’ chest as he pulls me into another hug.

“He will be okay. He’s been frantic without Moni. You have to remember they are mated; he will be able to feel his way to her. Or at least, he should be able to. Now, tell me what’s wrong.” He gives me a big squeeze, and I break down in his arms. I don’t know how long I ugly cry, but Knots allows me to do so silently—exactly how I was wishing for—until all that’s left is sniffling and the occasional tears.

My body relaxes against him as he rocks me against his chest. Sweetly, he pulls my hair tie loose from my hair and starts massaging my scalp as tears coat his shirt, soaking the skin underneath.

‘Shh. I’m here now,’ Knots says against my heated forehead.

‘How are you here? I thought you couldn’t leave the dorm?’ I ask through our link, pulling myself tighter against his muscled chest. The tears that have already drenched his shirt now cool my heated cheek as I press myself against him, hearing his soothing and steady heartbeat. He’s here. He’s really here, holding me just like I needed him to be.

‘I thought I couldn’t leave either, but apparently, you’re the key. I was restraining Chester from leaving the dorm when I felt a pull and we popped up here, so if you want answers… You need to ask yourself that.’

I let out a frustrated sigh that only adds to my tears as I pull back my hair over my other shoulder.

‘We can work this out together. What were you thinking about before I was pulled here?’ Knots shifts so we’re sitting side by side, and he runs his thumb up and down my arm. Goosebumps pebble along my skin, but I lean into him more, his familiar touch soothing me.

‘I was thinking about how much I wanted you to comfort me and just tell me things would be okay,’ I admit.

‘So, there is something wrong.’ Knots sits up and glances around for any danger.

‘No… I mean… Isn’t there always something wrong?’ I say as I lay a hand on his chest.

He sighs. ‘So, what must we conquer this time?’ He gently caresses my cheek before smiling down at me, and I can’t help but release a sigh.

I give him a watery yet sarcastic smile. ‘Well, we’re in Hell, specifically in L.A.M.B.’s residence.’

‘Oh! I heard they are pleasant to be around. Did you find Lynx?’ he inquires.

‘Yeah, we did bu—’

‘Well see? All is well; no one died.’

‘Lynx did!’ I cry out, releasing another bout of tears.

Knots rears back as if I’ve slapped him and gives me a deer in the headlights look. ‘Um… what? Say that again.’

“Lynx died and came back to life, but he doesn’t have his memories of me, of us,” I pronounce each word slowly, shaking my head before I bite my lip.

“Okay. That’s a problem. Anything else?”

“I’m not Lucifer’s best friend right now because of my holy, or rather unholy, thoughts.”

“What do you—” He’s cut off by the whooshing sounds from the bedroom through the door that Chester must have left open. “What was that?”

“Oh, the fireplace shooting brimstone because of my sentence. That’s why I’m not his favorite.” I tuck my head down and smirk as Knots lets out a boisterous laugh.

“This is perfect! Talk about some built-in entertainment.” He grabs my chin gently and lifts it. “But do not worry. You have my life and shield. I will protect you wherever I can follow,” he declares, and I fall for him a little more.

“Thank you. Think you can also take out Lilith?” His eyes go wide at my words, but I just brush it off. “I’m kidding. Kinda. It’s just… She’s finally been relieved of her possession and is acting crazier than the Mad Hatter in Wonderland. Plus, she said that Jillian isn’t my mother.”
