“Do we know whose mind we will be in?” Knox asks. The question is meant for Zeke, but he keeps his eyes locked on mine. His expression is a mix of sympathy and determination, and I can’t help but attempt to iron out the crease between his brows with the pad of my thumb before kissing his forehead. He so has my heart right now.

“No clue. But I have a good idea that since it says council, it will be a council member and not Rez this time,” Zeke answers with a shrug.

“I’m okay,” I reassure Knox and lean forward to give him another kiss. “Thank you.”

“Anytime, kitten.”

After everyone gets settled again, I look over and find Zeke looking at me with sadness in his eyes. Shit. I really need to work on my relationship with him. I give him a smile, and he brightens slightly before Levi clears his throat to get our attention.

“Before we continue, did everyone see Diablo’s eyes at the end?” Levi asks “Does anyone have any guesses as to why he suddenly woke up?”

Fuck!

I guess since Lynx lost his memories, I’m the only person who knows the real reason I was brought to Purgatory. I haven’t had a chance to have a pow-wow with everyone, so I might as well come clean.

“I might have the answer to your question,” I confess. “The first day I met Knox, I needed some time to myself.” Knox jerks back, knowing that I meant the day he played that prank on me. But I quickly give him a soft smile, letting him know there’re no hard feelings and continue. “So, I found a little glade, and Anwen came to me. She showed me how supernaturals were formed from the Four Horsemen before they became Diablo. Anwen showed me a scene where Diablo sacrificed himself to end the resistance. She then explained how Purgatory worked on a fine line of checks and balances and how it’s been out of whack lately. Then she showed me the image of me lying in the rubble before anyone showed up. I just didn’t know that was what I was looking at.” I go on, telling them that Diablo apparently pulled me here to help restore balance to the realms, but I have no clue how I’m supposed to do that.

“Shit, now that’s heavy,” Zeke comments, slowly shaking his head as his eyes go glassy. It’s as if he’s imagining what it was like for me.

“Well, that would explain why you were found by Diablo and why he’s dormant again,” Levi murmurs to himself as he rubs his chin. I swear his mannerisms are so much like Lucifer’s.

Knox pulls himself tighter against me as Knots gives me a contemplative look, and I catch Ryker’s fleeting look of worry before he winks and gives a sly smile.

“Such a badass,” he says.

Knox gives me one more tight squeeze before moving back to his seat next to Ryker.

“Aww yeah. That’s how my bestie does it. She doesn’t do anything easy. She makes you work for it. Can’t do anything easy. No handjobs. No blowjobs. No quick fixes for the world. Let’s just save all the realms.” Lynx winks and does a little wiggle in his seat.

A sigh escapes me at his antics, along with a giggle. He’s just too crazy.

“Don’t worry, bestie; that’s why we’re here. We won’t let you fail. We’re Batman to your Robin,” Moni cheers!

I think it’s the other way around, but who am I to ruin her vision?

“Either way, you’re stuck with us, ma chérie,” JP says and blows me a kiss.

“Thanks,” I reply, looking over at Zeke once again. “Want to start up the next clip? I know I’m ready.”

“Everyone else ready?” he asks before sending us back into the Matrix once again.

CHAPTER 12

No big Deal, Only History Repeating Itself

Nodding to a few students as I passed, I quickly made my way to the medical building.

“Good morning, Dean Caldron. You’re the last to show up,” the redhead receptionist said as a greeting. “If you’ll follow me?” I nodded in thanks, and she escorted me back toward the observation wing. Reaching the hall, she buzzed me in where there were guards posted at the other end.

Hmm, that’s unusual. Maybe this really was an emergency. Since when do we need guards around the school?

Carl popped his head out of the door to my left, pushing his dark-rimmed glasses up on his nose before waving me over. I walked into a decent-sized room with all white walls and hardly any art, besides a calendar with a picture of a kitten that said: “Just hang in there.” There’s a filing cabinet against the far wall, and a frosted window embedded in the wall to the right of the door. The rest of our rag-tag group was already seated at a long wooden table in the middle of the room.

Daniel sat in his impeccable three-piece suit, with his auburn hair slicked back, His assistant, Jeffery—who was furiously writing notes—was left standing behind him. As Mayor, he’d already taken his seat at the head of the table.

Even without seeing his face, I would have noticed Jessup and his shiny shaved head a mile away. His fury rolled off of him in palpable waves while he was berating a few guards in the corner. My instinct was to diffuse the situation, but I knew better than to get between the Chief of Police and his men. He’d been on edge lately. I needed to make a mental note to make sure he was shifting enough for the release.
