“And without?” I push him.

“You’ll slowly waste away in a few days, either dying or becoming a true fallen angel and possibly be trapped in Hell. So make sure you get back here before then,” he advises me as the room gently rocks from his words.

“You won’t tell Rez that part?” I ask Dr. Steinbeck.

“Doctor–patient privilege. My lips are sealed,” he replies.

I nod and glance up to see Ryker, Lynx, JP, and Lilith studying me.

“No one tell Rez! We only show positivity, got it?” I demand.

Lynx and Ryker give me a reluctant thumbs up. JP nods but doesn’t make eye contact, and Lilith just smiles as she nods.

I lean back and close my eyes as I wonder what will happen next if this spell doesn’t work.

I must have drifted off to sleep because Rez wakes me with feather light kisses.

“Hey, big guy. It’s time to wake up and see if this works,” Rez coaxes, and the smell of something delicious accompanies her.

I pull myself into a sitting position, looking around the room to notice we are now alone. “Where’s the puppy?”

“Taking after his namesake right now, I’m sure.” She giggles.

“What did you end up naming him? He was warm and comforting.” I tell her and she laughs.

“I definitely didn’t name him anything like that. While you’ve been asleep, he’s been causing chaos. Chasing after Arte Demons, peeing everywhere, chewing on a few things he shouldn’t be. So, he’s been my little collector of chaos. He’s a little reaper.”

“So you named him Reaper?”

“Yep!”

“Fitting.” I nod. Then I spot a covered tray behind her on the counter. “Whatcha got there?” I ask.

“Oh, that’s our dinner,” she answers. “But first…” She lifts up a rope chain necklace with the Demstone attached.

Mixed emotions hit me as I see the finished product of the spell in her hands. I know she needs it for Levi, and needs more for the others, yet she’s giving me the only one she has.

“Rez—”

“Nope. I won’t hear it. Besides, it’s already done, and I want you feeling better so you can see me get my ass kicked by Astaroth with these new weapons.” She tries to wiggle her eyebrows, and it makes her look ridiculous but drags a chuckle out of me.

Sighing, I bow my head so she can slip the chain over it. Holding the stone in her hands, she whispers, “Custodire.”

“Protect?” I question, raising an eyebrow as she lays the charm against my chest.

Rez gives me a sheepish look and shrugs. “Lilith said it works mostly on intent from the user. So, do you feel anything?” she asks, biting her lower lip.

I shake my head. “No. I don—wait.” The necklace starts to warm, but that’s the only indication I feel that it’s working. “The necklace feels warm.” I smile at Rez, and she does a little dance and fist pump.

“Good. I didn’t want to lose you either,” she says, and pulls me in for a kiss, her lips soft against mine as I pull her close to me.

“Never,” I promise, pushing her hair out of her face. My stomach growls, and she laughs.

“It seems like I can save you twice!” She pulls away and grabs the tray, bringing it over and climbing on the bed with me. “Dinner is served,” she announces. Pulling off the lid, she reveals two bowls of soup and sandwiches. “Compliments of Lilith. Dr. Steinbeck advises you to take it easy for the rest of the day and tomorrow, and once you’re back home, you should be fine.”

“Thank you for taking care of me,” I tell her, and sweetly she grabs my hand and squeezes it.
