“Great,” he exclaims as he approaches. “Now, try to relax,” he instructs as he places his fingers along my temples. They immediately start to warm, radiating a comforting heat that causes my eyes to close as I relax.

My head starts to tingle as goosebumps rise along my skin. “I’m just searching right now, that’s what you’re feeling. Hopefully, you’ll feel me going deeper once I find your magic,” Murmur expresses.

The shift is noticeable, like when you wrap yourself inside a warm blanket when it’s cold. My body completely relaxes and I feel my knees go weak, but instead of dropping, something wraps around my waist and holds me up.

“That’s it… just a few more minutes,” Murmur assures me as my head feels like it’s being massaged. A deep tissue massage that I feel traveling down my spine, straight to my fingers and toes. I’m about to moan, but the sensation abruptly stops when Murmur’s fingers leave my head.

“There! Let’s see if that worked, but we’ll start off small.” His tail unravels from around my waist, and he sits down in front of me. “Well, come on, you didn’t really want to waste all night, did you?”

Blinking a few times to chase away the dreamy state, I nod and sit down in front of him. “Wait! What did you find out in my head first?” Now that I have a clear head.

“Your barrier was almost completely gone, so I gently pulled it back so there’s nothing blocking you from your magic now. You just need practice and knowledge.” He winks at me.

“Okay, that’s great. Did you get a hint of what my abilities might be, or what I will be able to do? Or hell, what species I am?” I almost plead with the Mischief Demon.

His jovial smile drops slightly before he leans forward. “I’m sorry, Rez, but even that information I couldn’t pull from you. It was protected, but I could tell that you have immense potential that could even rival the strongest leaders put together.”

Well fuck me with a rubber hose.

“Okay, let’s try to pull from your shield to create a barrier,” he says, placing a small knife in my palm like he didn’t just drop a bomb in my lap. “Try to picture the silvery field as a layer of silk that’s a part of you. It’s able to manifest from wherever you want it to come from, and you can control it when it turns solid. I want you to concentrate and picture it surrounding the knife, sealing it,” Murmur tells me.

I nod and stare at the knife. “It might be easier if you close your eyes at first,” he guides me, and I guess that makes sense. Closing my eyes, I picture a big spool of silk deep inside of me, waiting to do my bidding. I imagine it traveling down my arm and out through my fingers. Wrapping a tight hold around the knife, I picture my silk becoming hard as rock.

“Open your eyes,” Murmur whispers.

I slowly open my eyes, and my heart drops at the sight. Lying in my hand is just the knife, no defensive shield or anything. I sigh and try to hold back the stinging tears as Murmur observes me.

“I really thought I had it,” I admit, trying to keep the disappointment out of my tone.

He starts chuckling and gently places his finger under the edge of the handle and slowly lifts.

“Who said you didn’t?” he smiles as the knife lifts up without him physically touching it. I lean over and realize there’s a solid silver shield around it, leaving the smallest gap between him and the blade. “You wrapped it so tight you couldn’t even see it. It’s as if it’s wearing a second skin as protection. Congratulations.”

CHAPTER 24

Unlocking Hell’s Paradise

Rez

I’m absolutely ecstatic as I spend a few minutes practicing putting on the shield, trying to be a little faster with each effort. While I push myself physically, I also ask Murmur if he could tell what kind of supernatural I was while he was poking around in my head. Unfortunately, my signature wasn’t something he was used to seeing, so that was a deadend. I continued to pull my shield until I mentally started to tire, then Murmur called it a night.

I waste no time heading back to my room and straight to the shower. Reaper follows me until he sees the closet and then curls up in front of the doors. Poor soul got a work out in, chewing up the wooden bo-staffs. I don’t even bother to turn on the lights until I’m in the bathroom. The heat from the shower loosens my tight muscles as I slowly wash away the day’s grime and sweat.

I would almost take today’s treatment personally if my friends weren’t getting rough treatment as well. I saw Moni working with Murmur earlier, and she was able to make a smaller boom bomb—her words, not mine—before she fainted from joy. Turns out Chester is a natural with Guandao, which—according to Astaroth—is a Chinese weapon. It has a massive blade at one end and a smaller spear at the other. His agility helps him when it comes to sparring. If it wasn’t for his glasses slipping off of his face, he might have beat Zissa in their match.

Levi seemed confident with the bo-staff when he disarmed Ryker one-on-one. JP worked with throwing stars, and when he added his water to the mix, he was able to direct them into the dummies from across the room. Talk about impressive. Murmur tasked Lynx to practice shifting until it became second nature once again. Needless to say, he worked on it all evening. I just hope tomorrow’s adventure is a success and we’re able to get the Demstones and the bat flowers that we need.

Drying off, I don’t even bother to go to the closet in search of clothes. There’s no point. Moni is shacking up with Chester, and from her earlier conversation, learning a lot. I chuckle to myself, thinking of her kink slip-up as I get into bed. I moan as my body melts into the soft mattress. Leave it to Hell to at least have comfortable beds. I roll to my side and an arm slips around my waist.

“FUCK!” I shriek as the arm tightens around my midsection.

“Spitfire, it’s okay. Calm down,” Zeke says as he nuzzles into my neck.

“What are you doing?” I ask, flipping on the nightlight to the lowest setting and turning around to face him.

“I was sleeping.” He cracks one eye open against the light to peer at me. It’s not long before his hand shifts lower where my shorts would normally sit and he pauses. “Rez?”

“Hmm?” I bite my lip as I peek at him innocently.
