“Not just any kids. Recognize any of them, Lucifer?” Astorath urges as he walks over to the other two.

Wait. Did he just say Lucifer?

“The L in L.A.M.B.,” Ryker whispers into my ear, trying to be quiet, but the Demons smiling at me is a sure sign that he failed.

“Lilith’s brood,” he confirms, nodding his head. “How in the name of Hell did you guys get in my vault?” He places his hands on his narrow hips as he glares at us.

I’m getting really tired of people asking the same fucking question. Don’t they know that if we fucking knew, we would be glad to answer so we could get the hell out of here?

“If we knew how, we would tell you,” I say, standing up. We did nothing wrong here. In fact, falling into Hell was a godsend. Fire erupts in the dead fireplace, making me shriek, and Moni faints with a plunk. JP reaches down to pick her up off of the footstool she was sitting on, moving her to the loveseat.

“Please don’t take His name in vain. Hell doesn’t tend to like it, as you can see,” Lucifer says with a dull tone and points to the fireplace. There’s now a long black scorch mark along the marble wall that was once white.

“Oops. But wait, I just thought it; I didn’t say it,” I argue.

“Same thing,” Lucifer counters, giving me a pointed look.

“Sorry,” I say, biting my lip until Lucifer waves it away.

Levi stands and tries to straighten out his clothes. Soon enough, though, he gives up and just curls his lips in disgust when he sees the extent of the damage.

“Lucifer, we do not know how we ended up in your vault. We were escaping the Rebels when the floor opened up, and instead of falling to our death, we somehow went through a portal and ended up there. We apologize for any inconvenience,” Levi says in an eloquent and professional tone.

I know I wouldn’t have been able to pull that off. Now that the emotional rollercoaster has slowed down, the main thing I feel is irritation. I’m also frustrated that Lynx doesn’t seem to remember anything, and I want a change of clothes and maybe a damn shower.

“Well, that’s not good enough. There has never been a break-in into my personal rooms; it’s impossible. They are spelled, and since you’ve saved me the time in having to track you down, we migh—”

“No! I’m tired, hungry, and still have dried cum in my ass crack.” I tick off with my fingers. “I need a fucking shower and clean clothes. You can interrogate us later, after we have cleaned up and eaten some food. We’ve been through… well, Hell… before we got here, and I need to decompress before I explode.” I ramble on, and it’s not until I take a deep breath and look at the Demons that what I just admitted hits me.

“And you say I’m the one that should use the link for embarrassing shit,” Lynx says before bursting into a laughing fit while my friends join in, except for Knox.

He comes up behind me and wraps his big arms around my waist and nuzzles into my neck. Yep, he’s winning brownie points with me today. The Demons all drop their eyes from me and bite either their lips or the inside of their cheeks to keep from laughing at me. I swear, if I was Moni, I would boom them all to kingdom come.

Boom.

The fireplace shoots fire along the wall once again, making me jump into Knox’s arms.

Well, that’s one way to shut them up.

CHAPTER 3

Road of Hard Knots

Knots

‘The word is anxiety, Knots. You should know that by now,’ Willow reprimands me as I pace across the living room.

‘Are you sure? It feels twice as bad now that I’m able to move outside of my door,’ I point out.

Well, maybe outside of my door is wrong, considering I can’t step outside of this dorm room, which I’m now stuck in. At first, I started out just being a little worried as it started sprinkling outside, and I hoped Rez, Moni, and Chester didn’t get too cold. Then, when the rain started to downpour, my nerves skyrocketed, making my gut clench. I tried to distract myself by watching TV and working out, but that was a lost cause when word came through the Door Knights about the imminent Rebel attack.

‘Yes, I’m sure,’ she replies. If I could see her, she would roll her eyes at me.

I glance out the window and see lightning flash across the sky, putting me on pins and needles. Before I return to my pacing, movement on the ground catches my eye. There, between the shadows and highlighted by the lightning, are Rebels walking out of the woods and heading toward the school.

It’s an evening of phenomena I’ve never seen before. We’ve had rain here, that’s a given, but the vicious winds, lightning, and rising sea levels—judging by the swells down at the beach—have never happened before. Now the school is under attack, and the only things I care about are my wards and their safety. I can’t do anything to help them unless they are here.

Why did I allow them to go? I murmur to myself.
