Her breath hitches in her throat and her head falls back, her chest moving up and down in deep, rhythmic movements as I move back and forth softly, teasing out more moisture. I can feel the shape of her, soft and delicate. Like a flower.

“Then how’s this happening?” she asks, her voice choked and tense.

“I don’t know,” I grunt, pressing into her harder, my lips on her neck. “But I don’t want to talk anymore.”

She cries out as my fingers press into a small nub at the top of her mound. “But back at—back at the house, you said you came here to talk to me.”

“That was before this,” I grit out, pulling my hand up and setting it on her chest, still moving rhythmically. “You look so beautiful, Hetty. You sound so beautiful.”

Her eyes flick down to my hand, and her fingertips dance over my hand, pressing into her call. “What is this … inside me?” she asks, her voice thick. “What’s happening to me?”

“It’s your call,” I grunt, finally pulling back to look down at her. My eyes move over her familiar face, her blue eyes dark and confused. “You’re my mate, Hetty.”

She stiffens, her eyes focused on my chest, her mouth open, and her eyes filled with tears. “But I can’t be…” She shakes her head. “How?”

“I don’t know,” I reply, honestly. “Do you still hate me?”

“Maybe. Are you going to hurt me again?” Tears spill over her cheeks, and her voice is thick with emotion. “The things you said that night, Noah… I don’t want this to happen if—”

“Shh.” Cradling her face in my hand, I pull back and stare straight into her eyes. “I’ll never hurt you again. I promise.”

“You won’t?”

“I’d sooner tear my own heart out,” I say, my voice guttural.

Her eyes flash. She stares at me as if pondering something before tilting her head and exposing her neck to me. Her pulse is moving rapidly under her skin, inviting me to sink my teeth into her. To taste her.

“You want me to mark you?” I growl, moving my hands up her body and eyeing the smooth white skin hungrily.

“Yes,” she whispers, meeting my eyes. “I want you to do it right now.”

“You’ll be mine,” I croon deeply, nestling my face into her neck and inhaling deeply. “Forever. No turning back.”

A husky sound vibrates in the back of her throat, her fingers grasping my shoulder, pulling me forward.

“Just do it,” she whispers. “Now.”

I release a shaky breath and close my eyes, my fangs settling against her skin, scraping and tasting her salty sweetness.

It’s finally happening.

She’s my mate.

Mine.

I press into her, but just as I have the chance to taste her, someone yanks me back by the collar. I roar as I’m torn away and thrown down the beach, skirting across the sand before banging into a far-off boulder.

Before I can move, something dark flies across the sand and hurls into me. I groan at the impact, opening my eyes to see Rill’s ugly, scarred face hovering inches from mine.

“What the—?” I’m cut off as something stings my neck, and I slump down low against the rock.

Rill sniffs and puts something shiny and pointy in his shirt pocket. His eyes glitter as he kneels in the sand, hissing close to my ear, “It looks like I finally have a good enough excuse to kill you.”

I don’t have an opportunity to react before his pressure throws my body hard against the rock again, and everything goes black.
