Rill and I look up simultaneously. Wyatt approaches, as well as Pike, Rill’s close confidant and mate to Lyn, Camilla’s mother.

“How’s the baby?” I ask Wyatt as he sits next to me. “And Camilla?”

“Good!” His voice is threaded with excitement as he smiles appreciatively. “Camilla survived, but it was hard on her. He’s a big baby.”

“I took Noah to see Jason,” Rill announces bluntly.

“C’mon, Rill,” I reproach him.

He shrugs unapologetically. “Sorry, but we gotta get to the point. No time for bullshit.”

Dismissing him with a scoff, Wyatt’s eyes flick toward me nervously. “You saw Jason, huh?”

“Yep,” Rill interrupts again, launching into an explanation of what Jason told us. I don’t try to stop him, happy to let someone else talk about this.

As he talks, a handful of different alphas show up, listening in and sitting down on logs. I don’t know most of them, but a couple are familiar—Nick and Run, specifically.

Strangely, when Run and I make eye contact, he nods at me cordially. I guess that fight is over, at least.

As Rill continues to speak, the overcast weather becomes more and more blustery, the wind electric. There’s a snap to the air, and lightning in the distance.

“How do you wanna handle this, boss?” Pike asks slowly, like this attack is nothing to be concerned with—just another day in the life of an alpha.

“We’re gonna fucking fight, of course,” Rill says with a maniacal smile. “A chance to take out that many pigeons at once? I’m sure they’ll come by the truckload. We’ve been waiting for this opportunity for years.”

Loud cheers and whoops break out at the news, and exhilaration thrums in the air as they all start talking at once. Obviously, this is exciting news for them, but my heart sinks as I stare at their animated faces.

“What about the people in Goldenrod?” I finally ask loudly, breaking through the spell. Everyone comes to a standstill, staring at me like they didn’t understand a word I said.

“What about ’em?” Pike asks, his brow raised.

“How are we going to get them out?”

Now Rill lifts a brow. “Get them out?”

“I think we should evacuate them before the fight starts,” I say, leaning forward with my elbows resting on my knees. “Let those of us with pressure take on the men and get everyone else safely here.”

“Nah, the alphas can fight with us.” Rill waves his hand dismissively. He shrugs. “But I guess it’s probably a good idea to get as many omegas out as possible. At least the young ones—they’re valuable.”

“Only the young ones? What about the elderly?” I ask, appalled. “And Goldenrod alphas are too civilized to fight. That’s not going to happen.”

Rill’s head whips to the side—now he’s the shocked one. “Too civilized? Are you too civilized?”

I shift in my seat, ignoring his question. “Not a single Goldenrod alpha will have the knowledge or desire to fight.” I nudge my brother, sitting silently with his arms crossed. “Wouldn’t you agree, Wyatt?”

My brother sighs loudly and uncrosses his arms. “Noah’s right. No one in Goldenrod is going to fight. The Order doesn’t allow it.”

There are some angry rumblings, and Rill opens his mouth to argue.

Quickly, I hold up a hand, silencing him. “Spare us your opinions on the Order, Rill. They’ll allow themselves to be slaughtered before they fight back—that’s all there is to it.”

Rill groans and throws his hands in the air. “God damn, you people are crazy! What do you propose then?”

I sigh, my mind reeling, before looking up sharply. “When we get there, I’ll find Marcus Catmint and explain. Maybe if I can get him onboard, we can build a convincing argument.” I pause. “Or at least we can convince him to help get the omegas and betas out before morning.”

“Not the betas,” Rill clips out, shaking his head.

“Why not?”
