“They just aren’t as pretty as you,” Carvin said, giving her a smile that made the corners of his eyes crinkle.

Alexis laughed, but it felt hollow. It was Magnus she wanted. This man, while handsome and charming, was a pale comparison to the ravishing man she spent the night with.

“Do you use that kind of line on all the girls?” Alexis asked, reaching into her purse for some lip balm. Her lips were a little chapped after all the kissing last night.

“Only the pretty ones,” Carvin said. “Can I get your number? I’d love to take you out sometime and get to know you.”

Alexis’s cheeks were starting to hurt from smiling so much this morning, but she forced a smile as Carvin handed her his phone. Her heart gave a little pang that Magnus couldn’t be bothered to ask for her phone number after the night they shared, while Carvin had no problem asking.

She pushed that to the side as she started typing in her number for the man in front of her, deciding she might as well. It seemed Magnus just wasn’t interested in anything more, she supposed.

“It was nice to meet you,” she said, handing Carvin’s phone back. “I’ll see you around.”

“I’ll call you,” Carvin promised. “Have a safe journey home.” He leaned in to kiss her cheek just as Alexis pulled away. She tried to move back at the last second, but Carvin was already moving back, creating an awkward dance between the two of them.

“Oops, sorry,” Alexis said, cheeks going red. “See ya.” She spun around and made a beeline for her friends, hoping to erase the awkward moment between them.

“Was that the guy you spent the night with?” Chloe asked when she got back to the table. “I thought I saw you with a different guy.”

“You’re right, but that guy disappeared,” Alexis told her. “This guy asked for my number, though, so I figured what the hell, right?”

“You only live once,” Lillian agreed.

“Look, there’s Fi,” Chloe pointed toward the entrance of the room.

"Looks like someone else got lucky last night," Alexis called out, waving from her table.

Even though Fiona was reluctant to kiss and tell, Alexis had no qualms about sharing how incredible her night was. If she didn’t know better, you’d think she had fallen in love. But that was ridiculous. They’d only been together a few short hours.

After everyone finished their breakfasts, they headed out. Alexis took one last look back, hoping to glimpse Magnus, but he was nowhere to be seen. Oh, well. At least she had fun, and she got someone’s number, even if it wasn’t the one she really wanted.

MAGNUS

“Hey, boss?”

Lost in thought, he barely heard her. Phoebe tried again.

“Boss? Magnus!”

It took Phoebe three tries before Magnus realized she had been speaking to him.

“What’s up?” he asked, turning his leather office chair to face her.

“I have to ask, what has your attention this week?” Phoebe asked. “We have to get this deal with Crispin Pharmaceuticals finalized, but you’ve rescheduled the meeting three times.”

Though he tried throwing himself into work, Magnus couldn’t get Alexis off his mind. Ever since the night they spent together at the masquerade, his mind was preoccupied with thoughts of her, from her silken blonde hair to her soft, plump lips to her curvaceous figure.

“Sorry,” Magnus apologized. “I’m here. What have we got left?”

“Just this pile of paperwork.” Phoebe pointed to the stack. “It all needs to be signed before the meeting on Friday.”

Even outside of the physical, something about Alexis was still drawing Magnus in. He tried to block thoughts of what his panther had told him that night, but it was proving to be more difficult than he expected.

He’d deliberately avoided getting her number and even slipped away when her friends came over to join them, taking the opportunity to avoid an awkward goodbye.

Whatever happened between them, he’d chalked up to a great night. He tried to forget and move on.
