On the other hand, Magnus had just showed up out of the blue at her apartment with a giant box of candy and a bouquet the size of her car. These were all a bit of a red flag for her.

“I’m going to have to turn you down,” Alexis said finally. She could see the way the light in his eyes dimmed, and she felt a flutter in her chest. It was guilt. She felt guilty at having disappointed him.

“Too much?” Magnus asked, forcing a smile on his face.

Alexis snorted. “Yeah, a little. You’re a stranger, and I just can’t have you coming up to my apartment like this. We don’t even know each other,” she added.

“Well, sounds like there’s only one solution to the problem then,” Magnus said, standing up straighter. “Go out with me.”

Alexis’s mouth dropped open, and she stared at him. “Are you serious?”

“As a hangnail,” he replied. “If you go out with me, you’ll get to know me and see that I’m not as much of a weirdo as I’m coming across right now.”

Though hesitant, Alexis had to admit there was something utterly intriguing about the way Magnus showed up at her place, intent on making a grand gesture. It was unique, for sure.

“Okay,” she said after a long moment of scrutiny. “I’ll go out with you. As long as it’s somewhere public.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Magnus said, reaching into his coat pocket. He withdrew something that gleamed in the moonlight as he held it out for her. “My card,” he said, offering it to her. Alexis took it, glancing over the information. “This can be a starting point for your research into me.”

She snorted, tucking the card into her purse. “How do you know I’ll look you up?”

“I’m sure you’re curious,” Magnus said. “But you’ll see when you research me that I’m a good guy despite the way I came across tonight. I know I didn’t make a sparkling second impression, but I hope you’ll let us start fresh the next time we see each other.”

Alexis’s lips twitched despite herself. Magnus was strangely charming despite the red flags he had given off.

“I’ve got to go. I’ll text you,” Alexis said, turning to head into her building. Magnus offered out the box of candy and the flowers, but she shook her head and laughed again, heading inside.

It was taking all her strength to walk away because the urge to pull him in and kiss him was growing inside her despite her best efforts.

She watched from the window as he got into his car and drove away, leaving her to wonder just who Magnus was.

Pulling out his card, she looked at it once more.

Magnus Kade, it read. President and CEO of Kade Industries.

She reached for her tablet and typed his name into the search bar.

TEN

MAGNUS

MATE.

Magnus kept his distance despite the beast inside urging him forward. Alexis, it was obvious, was uncomfortable with his proximity, and he wanted to do everything in his power to show her that he wasn’t the screwball she thought he was.

To be fair, showing up at her home after fucking her and walking away wasn’t exactly his finest moment. He needed to prove to her that he had her best interests in mind. Then, he was going to prove to her that she was his. Completely and irrevocably.

What stunned him and kept him rooted to his spot was when he realized two specific things. The first was that she really was his mate. His panther hadn’t been under the influence of the full moon that night. This woman belonged to him.

The second was that the hunter’s block hadn’t blocked her animal’s scent. Oh, no. It was that she didn’t have an animal. Alexis was human.

A human mate …

He chuckled at the thought as he watched her walk into her apartment building. What a twist. Perhaps he should give up on the idea of winning her over. A human would complicate matters, but the moment the thought entered his mind, his panther snarled angrily. She’s ours.

We should mate with another panther and have children with someone like us, he tried to argue back. But even as he said it, he didn’t truly believe it, and his panther knew this. He remained silent inside Magnus’s mind for that simple reason.

Alexis was perfect. She was perfect for him and perfect for his panther. Her fire burned brightly, and it would only burn hotter if the two of them were together.
