She smiled up at him, dipped her finger in the cheese sauce, and wiped it on his cheek. “So do you.”

His laughter was a sound he hadn’t heard in a long time, and when he realized this, the smile died off his face. He was having fun. It was a foreign concept in his mind. Something he hadn’t thought about in years.

He was so busy working and running his pride, making sure everyone and everything was taken care of that he never stopped to take care of his own needs. Even his panther was, to be honest, neglected from all but the most basic care.

“What’s the matter?” Alexis asked, noting the change in his demeanor. “If it’s over this last cheese ball, then I regret to inform you that it’s not getting any better. This last ball is mine.”

He laughed again. “I’m … having a good time.”

She popped the cheese ball in her mouth and raised an eyebrow. “You sound surprised?”

He shrugged. “It’s been a while. And since you ate the last of my dinner, what should we try next?”

“Ah, to solve life’s greatest mystery …” Alexis looked around in serious contemplation. “I don’t know. You decide.”

“If I’m deciding, then we go to the deep-fried dessert truck and get something of everything.”

“Sold.”

She reached out to him, wrapping her fingers in his as they walked to the Sweets and Treats Truck. Magnus ordered seven different things off the menu, and before he paid, he looked down at her, questioning if he had missed anything.

She shook her head, and a moment later, they gorged themselves on too much sugar. When they couldn’t eat another bite, Magnus nodded to the pavilion, where several couples were dancing to music played by a live band.

“Care to dance?”

Alexis nodded. “I’d love to.”

With his arm around her waist and her hand on his shoulder, they glided across the dance floor. It wasn’t until she rested her head on his shoulder that Magnus realized just how perfect his mate really was.

ELEVEN

ALEXIS

The date may have started off rocky with a fancy candlelit dinner, but Magnus more than made up for it. The food trucks and the dancing proved to be a spectacular first date. Alexis couldn’t remember when she had last had so much fun.

Magnus wasn’t at all the kind of man she thought he was, and for that, she was grateful. There was something about him that captured her attention and drew her in. It wasn’t just his physical appearance, not that it hurt, but there was something innate within him that made her long for his attention.

It wasn’t something she’d ever experienced. Men came and went in her life. Dates were often dull, like the one she went on with Carvin, but tonight was spectacular. Hopefully, there would be more nights like this in her future.

As they walked off the dance floor, Alexis smiled up at him. “I had a really good time tonight, Magnus. Thank you.”

“I did too. I’m glad you gave me a second chance.”

“So am I.”

They walked down the street hand in hand. It was late, but despite the hour, people were rushing about, horns were honking, and car doors were slamming. His car was parked on Main Street, exactly where he’d left it.

“Let me drive you home,” Magnus offered.

She wasn’t ready for the night to be over. She wanted more time with him. And considering she took an Uber to the restaurant, it made sense for her to allow him to drive her home.

“Okay.”

He opened the passenger door for her, and she climbed in. The smell of new leather surrounded her. The car was immaculately clean. There wasn’t a speck of dirt on the floor mats or dust on the dashboard. There wasn’t even a fingerprint on the touchscreen display.

She crossed her legs and pulled her seat belt over her shoulder just as Magnus got in the vehicle. She was hesitant to touch anything for fear of dirtying his spotless interior.

“It’s so clean in here,” she said to him. “Did you just have it detailed?”
