He stood at one end of a large open field on the pride property, pacing back and forth while throwing punches in the air, imagining his rival’s face.

Although he’d be fighting Carvin in shifter form, he didn’t rule out the possibility of beating him in their human forms either.

Gathered around were the high-ranking members of the pride, watching with keen eyes as each of them patiently awaited the arrival of the second fighter.

Magnus tuned them out as he focused on preparing, but he overheard something that caught his attention.

“He’s ten minutes late already. He would have called by now.”

He spun around, marching toward Phoebe. His assistant stepped forward to meet him, ready for his command.

“Call Carvin. His ass should have been here by now.”

Others glanced around as Phoebe attempted to get into contact with Carvin, but there came no answer.

The adrenaline inside Magnus’s body was beginning to dwindle. A few more minutes passed before he eventually felt deflated, sighing as he rebuttoned his shirt.

“Hey,” called one of the pride members. “If Carvin isn’t coming, can we leave?”

Magnus reluctantly nodded. He may have won by default, but it certainly didn’t feel that way. Carvin was the one to shy away, but it still felt like a cheap victory.

“Of course, he didn’t show,” he growled, hastily throwing on his suit jacket. “He is and always will be a coward hiding behind meaningless words.”

He cursed Carvin’s name, staring regrettably at the ground. It was a shame that Carvin’s blood wouldn’t be staining the grass that day.

Things could have gone back to normal for him, but Magnus wasn’t quite so keen on letting Carvin slip away so easily. He’d pay for what he did to his fated mate. There was no running from his punishment.

“Sir,” interjected Phoebe.

“Perhaps we should track him down,” growled the pride leader.

“Respectfully, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Why?” he hissed. It wasn’t often that he was told his ideas were bad ones.

“Aside from the waste of time and resources, his failure to show himself proves to everyone here that he’s afraid of you. He’s cemented himself permanently beneath you, and there’s no way anyone can come back from being a coward.”

Magnus paused and considered her words, nodding as he accepted today’s outcome.

“You’re right,” he spoke. “In any case, Carvin seems to have gotten the message after my phone call with him.”

A chuckle escaped his mouth as he shook his head. Relief washed over his still-calming body.

He took faith in the notion that Carvin knew now not to mess with his fated mate. The would-be witnesses knew this, too, so maybe things did not turn out so bad for him after all.

“Come then,” he told his assistant. “Let’s get back to the office.”

Not long after, Magnus found himself back in front of the computer, the pen twiddling in his hand once more as if he had never left the building. He placed it down. He wouldn’t be using it anyway.

Pulling himself closer to the keyboard, he brought the tips of his fingers to the letters. They hovered above the keys as he thought of what to type.

“It’s a good thing I have people to organize the community fair,” he murmured.

His sole duty would be to deliver a speech. He just had to write it first. It was nothing he hadn’t done before, so it wasn’t a difficult task.

Instead, it was the presence of Alexis still not having left his mind. He laughed for a moment.

Oh, Alexis, why can’t I think of anyone today but you?
