“I’m bein’ honest.”

“But you aren’t supposed to be honest. This is fake. You’re confusing me.”

“I’ve seen you around town, too. You’re not the only one with eyes.”

She drags in a deep breath. “Okay… why didn’t you say anything then?”

“You’re half my age. Also, I suck at all this.”

“You’re not really sucking at it. It’s scaring me a little, but it’s not terrible.”

“Why am I scarin’ ya?”

“When’s your birthday?”

I laugh. “June 4. What about you?”

“May 28.” She smiles. “We’re both Geminis.”

“You like astrology?”

“I like the idea of it, but I don’t follow it much. I mean, I don’t really think the stars decide our destiny. If they did, though, we’d be wild together. Last I checked, two Geminis were pretty intense.”

I nod, my cock acting up, aching for whatever intensity two Geminis together means. “Intensity can be good.”

She smiles and sips her wine, her gaze on mine with heat. “Oh yeah. Intensity can be great.”

“I gotta ask, why aren’t you datin’ more? A girl like you, you’d think you’d have someone by now.”

“Yeah, you’ve clearly had too much to drink.”

“Why?” I can’t take my eyes off her.

“You’re saying weird things. This is pretend, and you’re talking to me like it’s not. I don’t know what to do with that.” I hear the anxiety raising in her voice.

“Well, hate to break it to ya, but I’m a big guy and a few glasses of wine aren’t goin’ to do much for me. I really have seen you around town, and I think you’re beautiful, but I figured only weirdos pursued somethin’ with an age gap this large.”

She laughs. “See, I’m a weirdo!”

I smile. “I didn’t mean it like that. Really, why don’t you date?”

“I do. I… my last relationship was so bad. It’s kind of what started the whole anxiety avalanche. I’m just… I can’t believe I’m going to have to see him for like…ever.”

“Why?”

“His dad is marrying my mom.” She says it as though she’s told me before, but she hasn’t.

My brows wrinkle. “Details… would be nice.”

She sighs and sucks down more wine.

I grab another bottle off the back counter and refill the short mason jars.

“We broke up four months ago. It was awful. He’s aggressive, pushy, and he knows better about everything. I don’t know. I hate my mother for marrying into his family.”

My chest tightens. “I’m stuck on pushy. Did he hurt you?”

She looks away and back again, finishing the last bite of garlic bread before she can open her mouth.
