‘‘So that’s when you planned all of this.’’ I swallowed.

He tilted his head to the side, an amused grin tugging on the corner of his lips. One of his eyebrows was raised slightly, then a chuckle followed from him.

‘‘I planned this from the moment I got your letter, love.’’

Thus far, I’d received two nicknames from him.

Bambi, for whatever reason, was the one that made me afraid. It wasn’t because of the cartoon, that was for sure; however, since I didn’t know why he’d nickname me after a deer. As Bambi grows up, he learns that there’s a lot of tragedy in the forest, as well as beauty and joy. It was unsettling.

But love? That one was almost endearing. Almost.

I wasn’t foolish enough to fall for his stupid tricks or handsome face. Granted, he did make me orgasm like no other man was ever able to, but that doesn’t mean he managed to lure me into his deathly trap. Not yet, and hopefully never.

I snapped my eyes back to him, realizing that there’s truth to his words.

The idiot that I was, I wrote that I am a big fan of his work, and that I work in the same field. I understood why that grabbed his attention, since I never expected the letter to be swayed off its course and land in the cell of a serial killer.

‘‘You see,’’ he continued, without waiting for a response from me, ‘‘I don’t get a lot of letters, let alone a letter, a sex-filled book and pictures of the person who sent me the gifts. I was intrigued, to say the least. And then I read your book.’’

His smile was huge, and his eyes had that crazy look within that made it impossible for me to look away. If I dared and glanced the other way, I was afraid he’d appear way too close to me.

‘‘I didn’t send that,’’ I blurted out.

‘‘What?’’ The tone in his voice didn’t change, but he spoke through gritted teeth. His jaw clenched, brows furrowed together. He was pissed.

I bit my bottom lip, mentally cursing myself out for allowing my tongue to be faster than my brain.

‘‘My friend found a website to connect with inmates. The letter was delivered to you by mistake, and she’s the one that sent the book with it. I didn’t know until after she sent it all.’’

The best move here was to be honest, but I wasn’t going to drop Sierra’s name. On some level, she wasn’t safe. Not yet, at least. I didn’t know when this man would lose his shit and start killing people again.

‘‘Is that so?’’

How was it possible for a voice to sound so dark? It was deep, rough and definitely sinister. He didn’t hide the malicious intent, nor did he want to, as it seemed.

Why did I start crying?

I wasn’t sobbing, but tears freely slid down my cheeks, a few droplets falling onto my hands. Blinking only made the situation worse, and before I knew it, it was beyond my control.

‘‘Please,’’ my voice trembled. ‘‘Let me go. I won’t tell anyone about this, just please… let me go.’’

He was by my side as quickly as possible. He pushed away my plate that had a small knife on it, and it was a clear sign of distrust. Micah crouched down to my level, brushing off the tears with his thumb, but that only made me cry harder.

‘‘So beautiful,’’ he whispered.

A grin started to form on his lips. His pupils dilated, almost to the point of his eye color being invisible. He used his free hand to stroke my hair, and with each touch, I flinched. He could’ve grabbed me by the hair and beat me at any time. I was too afraid to truly move.

‘‘Please,’’ I begged. But begging only seemed to widen the beam on his face. ‘‘Let me go. I don’t want this.’’

He tilted his head to the side, lightly caressing my cheek.

‘‘I’d believe you if you hadn’t come on my fingers last night.’’

I had no time to waste.

I was in my room.

I tried not to act suspicious, but that didn’t go quite as planned. He noticed the shift in my mood and behavior as soon as he got up and returned to his seat. I ate everything that was on the plate, ignoring the nausea that rose in my throat.
