‘‘Why?’’

‘‘I’ve been kidnapped, but I managed to escape. I need to tell them they can find me here before he does.’’

Jack chuckled. ‘‘Sure, sure, let me go call them.’’

Slowly, he rose to his feet, grabbing his cane in the process. I felt bad for him. He was way past working age, yet he still wore the sweatshirt with the logo of the station, and the full gear that prepared him for nasty weather. He barely walked.

‘‘So, kidnapped?’’

Jack’s voice brought me back to reality. My eyes darted to his, and I could’ve sworn that he had a grin on his face. However, it disappeared before I could be certain it was even there. I was seeing things.

‘‘Yes,’’ I responded, hesitantly.

‘‘What did he do to you?’’

That was a fucked-up question. He didn’t ask if I was hurt, if I was okay, but what Micah had done to me?

It was only then that I realized what kind of situation I’d found myself in.

I was a young woman, stuck inside of an empty gas station with three men I didn’t know. Sure, they could be nice and kind, but I was still way too relaxed around them, and trusted them almost immediately just because they provided shelter, food and water.

That was a rookie mistake.

I cleared my throat. ‘‘Nothing, he didn’t get the chance.’’

Before he could respond, Jack had returned.

I was hopeful.

‘‘Did you call them?’’

‘‘Sure I did.’’ He smiled. I didn’t like the way he smiled at all.

‘‘What did they say?’’

‘‘They’ll be here shortly.’’ That was when Jack and Richard seemed to have a silent conversation with their eyes. ‘‘In the meantime, would you like to rest? We have a bed in the back room.’’

‘‘I’m not really tired.’’

‘‘Are you sure?’’ Richard spoke through gritted teeth. ‘‘You must be tired.’’

It was almost like a threat. No, my gut feeling told me that it was, in fact, a threat.

Arguing with them could make things worse for me. I regretted leaving the cabin as soon as I saw the glare from both Jack and Richard.

‘‘Sure,’’ I agreed. ‘‘I could rest for a bit.’’

Jack’s demeanor switched almost immediately. ‘‘How lovely,’’ he commented, and then extended his hand for me to take. I was reluctant for a moment, but took it. I had no other options here.

Were they dangerous? What thoughts were running through their heads? Did I even want to know?

He led me to the backroom, and sure enough, it had a couch, a comfortable pillow and one of those thick, winter blankets that you couldn’t move under. He waited until I lay down, and then closed the door.

There were no candles in here, no windows. I was stuck in pure darkness, and I was shivering. And by now, I was no longer cold. The moment my eyes closed, all I saw were my demons, waiting to hunt me down.

Opening my eyes proved to be futile, as I was surrounded by the dark I loathed so much.

Yet, my mind drifted off to Micah.
