At that moment, I realized that Micah wasn’t the monster.

If anything, he was the only good guy in this story.

I sniffled, placed everything back as it was, or as good as my memory served me.

Then, just as I closed the lid, the front door closed with a slam. I had no time to put the box in its place entirely, and when he walked in, he caught me red-handed.

His brows were slightly raised.

‘‘Snooping around, Bambi?’’

Well, fuck.

I had a dream about you last night.

About us.

It was one of the greatest fantasies I’ve had in my life.

And I can’t wait to bring the fantasy to life, Bambi.

I can tell you want it, too.

That’s why you’ve kept all the letters I’ve sent, isn’t it?

That’s why you’ve kept me your little secret.

STORM

My hand rested on the box for a moment longer, until I realized that was where he was staring. In a rushed motion, I whisked my hand back; however, as I wasn’t exactly looking at what I was doing, I knocked down the box in a swift motion.

It fell to the floor with a thud, opening, and all its contents spilling next to my bare feet.

Reluctantly, I brought my eyes up, to find Micah with one of the calmest expressions I’d ever seen on his face. To be honest, I didn’t think he’d ever looked this…put together and relaxed.

When I first saw him inside of the prison cell, I noticed his eyes. They had a unique color, sea green. I’d never seen it in person before, but the more time I spent with him, the more I was enchanted by his gaze.

That shade between blue and green, the way it changed in the light, brought out his face. It made him noticeable, appealing, irresistible.

“I wasn’t snooping around.” Words confidently left my mouth, though I was anything but confident.

He didn’t say anything. For the first time, I couldn’t see whether he was pissed, pleased, aroused or simply angry as hell. He didn’t reveal his emotions, keeping them hidden from my reach. And somehow, that terrified me more than him being openly mad at me.

“Of course, you didn’t,” he uttered after what seemed forever of silence. “It was right there in the open.’’

Then why the hell did he say that I was snooping around? At times, he really made no sense.

I bent down and started picking up all the fallen papers from the box and putting them back in. I couldn’t remember exactly how it was placed, so I threw them all in together, closed the lid with a slight slam, then put it back on the table, acting as if nothing had happened.

‘’Are you hungry?’’ Micah asked.

I narrowed my eyes. Are we not going to address the elephant in the room?

That was when I realized that all the feelings I’d felt towards his sister, somehow transferred to him, too. He also suffered and got revenge on everyone who harmed his sister or was an accomplice.

I pitied him.
