‘‘Want me to cut to the chase or tell the entire story?’’

‘‘I know you’ll tell the entire story regardless of my opinion, so why even bother asking?’’

‘‘True,’’ he responded. I could hear the paranoia in his voice.

If anything, Dan was never good enough at keeping his emotions hidden. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and at times, it made me beyond furious. Not only was he incapable of keeping a stoic face, he was also incapable of telling a good lie.

‘‘The FBI turned Storm’s apartment upside down a few times. They did the same with that girl she went to live with. Seems like Storm was not that good at keeping your letters a secret. Some of them were left at her apartment, and they’re trying to use them to track you down. Did you say anything about that cabin or me in any of those letters?’’

I paused to think about it.

I’d sent her over a dozen letters before I took her with me. I just wrote whatever I thought at the moment, and everything was related to her. However, at the time, I was uncertain where I was going to bring her, so it was highly unlikely that I’d ever mentioned the cabin.

‘‘No,’’ I said. ‘‘I didn’t mention either.’’

‘‘There’s still a high chance of you getting caught within the next forty-eight hours, so make sure you wrap it up and finalize everything.’’

My brows creased. ‘‘Why?’’

Dan was quiet for a moment before releasing a deep breath.

‘‘Because I did a ton of research on both Storm Peyton and Storm Matthews. She has a personal blog and an author one. She mentioned the cabin her father owned and how much she missed spending time there after it was sold.’’

I cussed under my breath.

I read every single thing she’d ever written on both of her blogs. That was how I found out about the cabin as well, and how Dan announced that he was the owner of it. I forgot to get rid of those goddamn blogs. I got distracted by her silly little attempt to escape me.

‘‘Fuck,’’ I groaned.

‘‘That’s not the worst of it, Micah.’’ Dan’s words reluctantly left his lips.

‘‘On with it, Dan.’’

‘‘They found the bodies in the gas station a few hours ago. A couple was driving by and stopped for gas, and well…you can assume the rest. From the news reports, they have you on footage, and a very terrified Storm, until you shot the cameras. But they have you. Finalize everything for your escape, Micah. They’ll be there, soon.’’

Dan hung up, and that only managed to piss me off more.

I threw the phone against the wall, walked into the bathroom and splashed my face with ice cold water. I stared at the reflection in the mirror, water droplets falling down my face. That was the face that brought terror to this country.

Despite being in prison for years, people still had their doors locked, in fear of me coming in and doing the unthinkable. They feared me, and that fear was the only reason I was standing here today. That fear was the only reason Storm is mine, the only reason we were brought together.

I walked back into the bedroom and sat at the edge of the bed.

Lightly, I removed the fallen strand from Storm’s face and put it behind her ear.

I stared at her angelic face. She still didn’t know how much of a devil she truly was. Not once in my thirty-six years on this planet had I been so enthralled by a woman, even less one that was so much younger than me.

And the most fucked-up thing was that I had not regretted taking her, claiming her and tainting her body, mind and soul beyond repair. In fact, I loved every second of it. I was beyond satisfied with the fact that no other man would ever come close to me, she wouldn’t allow it.

Not now that she’d embraced her twisted thoughts, and she was finally getting rid of that shell.

Storm Peyton was born to be mine, to exist for me, to live for me.

And now that she was aware of it, she wanted it. Her body couldn’t reject me anymore, and her brain had accepted me long ago. She was mine until the day she died — and she knew it.

I trailed my finger over her soft skin, adoring the way it felt underneath my fingertips.

Sorry, Bambi.
