Before he had the chance to wake up, I removed all the ropes I’d previously put on his body. By the looks of it, he’d barely moved throughout the night. The rope wasn’t tightly wrapped around his wrists and ankles, and there wasn’t a mark left to show the strings were ever there.

The moment he was awake, I was alert. However, he was trying to hide the fact that he was awake. In a way, I found it adorable. Did he truly think I wouldn’t figure it out?

“Morning, Felix.” I grinned as he slowly peeled his eyes open.

Blinking a few times with a groan, he sat up and leaned against the couch. He tried to speak, then decided to regulate his breathing first, which was difficult given the fact I’d messed up the dosage. “What did you put in that tea?”

His voice was husky and rough. Clearing his throat didn’t help, and he winced at the tone. I couldn’t tell if he was unaware of the fact that he’d barely escaped death or simply pretending not to know.

“Some sleeping pills.”

“Even in your cup?” he retorted immediately, as if he’d expected that answer from me. How amusing.

“Of course.” I smiled. “Otherwise it would be pointless. You have to be committed to such acts, you know?”

“I don’t want to know,” he quickly said. “Did you put sleeping pills in that, too?”

He motioned with his head towards the plate of food set out in front of him. I sliced his pancakes, added strawberries on the side, and toasted some bread. I didn’t qualify as a chef, so boxed pancake mix had to be sufficient. They may or may not have been burnt slightly, but that only added to the taste.

With an eye roll, I took a piece off the plate and put it in my mouth. “Why would I want you asleep now? Besides, I never use the same tactic twice.”

“Let me be frank.” Although he was confident, he was still wary of me. Felix took a small bite of the pancake, eyes locked with mine. I raised an eyebrow and watched him eat in silence for a few moments. “I really didn’t want to come here and be your… sidekick. But since I have no other choices currently, can we just suck it up until Davorin gets here?”

I laughed. The serious expression that laced his soft features was too cute. He was truly a perfect toy for me to play with. Though I wouldn’t want him to get too scared and run away, which meant that I had to be careful how I approached him.

“You had another choice, but this one was better. I’m assuming the other one was death, but it was an option nonetheless.”

“That’s irrelevant,” he mumbled. “So, aside from the millions that I will transfer to your bank account, do you need anything else?”

I paused to think.

“Yes, you will clean this entire house tomorrow morning. I bought all the cleaning supplies before I arrived. It should be enough.”

Felix wasn’t content. “I’m not your maid. Besides, I’ve never cleaned anything in my life.”

I blinked. “It’s never too late to learn. It’s a basic survival skill. Now, start working, and I might be in a good mood later and take you out somewhere nice to eat.”

“What will you do in the meantime?”

“I’ll take care of the land behind the house.”

I wasn’t surprised to find Felix awake at seven in the morning. He was concerned about his well-being, and rightfully so. He had bags under his eyes and was yawning uncontrollably, though he didn’t complain about it too much.

Nothing but a forest spread around the house. Miles upon miles of green, thick branches that seemed never-ending. The scenery itself was beautiful. It was peaceful. The soft wind blew in my face, and the sounds of birds chirping filled my ears.

It was slightly chilly, and goosebumps formed on my forearms. I put my hair into a neat, high ponytail and kept my face bare of makeup. There was a lot of work that needed to be done quickly, and I couldn’t allow any stalling. A sigh escaped at the thought.

However, the house wasn’t built for someone who belonged to the criminal world—someone like me. From my understanding, this land was bought by the Karalis family simply because Rhea liked it and wanted to spend time here often. That clearly didn’t happen, given that she’d fallen in love with New York City as soon as she moved there.

It had one entrance, and that was also the only exit. Given that the woods behind the house didn’t provide an exit, I needed to take precautionary measurements. The awful feeling from yesterday still lingered around and if I were to be attacked whilst here, the only way out could possibly be blocked.

I had no intention of exploring the woods. However, I did purchase a lot of weapons that I brought outside with me. The goal was to hide them well but also make them accessible if necessary.

I felt the burnout before half of the guns were hidden. The rest were more or less thrown around, though they weren’t visible unless someone specifically looked for them. I always kept a gun and a knife on me, and, for now, I was safe.

An ominous taste spread on my tongue. The more I stared at the forest ahead of me, the more I felt the need to bolt out of this place. But I couldn’t. Not yet. My business here wasn’t finished. Instead, all I could do was wait for the storm that threatened to happen.

And it was going to happen sooner than I liked.
