“Repeat that.”

I stepped forward. “Felix is cute.”

Unexpectedly, his hand was on my throat, squeezing the sides. My strong gaze didn’t falter, and the sensation only made me stare harder at him. However, his lips parted as if he wanted to say something but was holding himself back.

“I dare you to speak of another man in such a manner in my presence again, little lion.” The threat was indisputable. “I promise you, regardless of who it is, I will skin him alive while you watch.”

“Don’t threaten me with a good time, Adrik.”

He rolled his eyes and laughed. The low tone made my senses go insane. Everything was immediately filled with him. My memories, my brain—all I wanted was this man, far beyond what was able to be described with words.

The lust for him was tragically alluring. Everything in me said that our fate was cruel and was screaming for me to put an end to this before it got me killed. Yet, my heart didn’t listen—I couldn’t listen. Until death do us part, this game would continue. He was mine, as I was his. No one alive could dispute that. And those who dared to question it would die by my hands.

As his grip loosened, I felt an immense need to audibly reassure him.

“Don’t worry about Felix,” I told him with a wink. “He’s nothing more than a cute pet.”

“I’m sorry, little lion.” He chuckled, removing his hand. “We won’t be keeping pets.”

Pouting my lips, I was ready to protest. However, before I could, Adrik turned around, shielding me with his body. Immediately, I was ready. I still had one full clip for the rifle—more than enough for one man.

“He’s here somewhere. Be careful.”

Something bad was about to happen, and it wasn’t either of us dying. The ominous feeling had returned a while ago, though I did my best to suppress it. My heart was beating like crazy, and adrenaline pumped in my veins.

“You go straight ahead.” Just like his tone not too long ago, mine didn’t allow any objections. Determination coated my tongue. Davorin was reluctant, afraid of all the possibilities. Everything could go south at any given moment.

“What are you thinking?”

“Don’t you trust me?”

Manipulating the biggest manipulator wasn’t easy, and it didn’t work. However, despite noticing the intention, he agreed. Oh, so he did trust me enough to listen to the words. That made me content beyond belief.

With one last glance and a small nod, he walked further away from me.

Now, the plan that had formed in my mind was not by any means smart. I was many things, but bulletproof wasn’t one of them. Given how the assassin managed to hide himself well, he wouldn’t miss the opportunity to catch me alone.

Davorin posed a threat to him—that much was obvious.

If taking a bullet in the stomach, arm, or a leg would make him lose the composure he had, I would take it. It would make the game all the more exciting; however, the man whose face I barely managed to catch a glimpse of was unknown.

His abilities were hidden and the lengths he would go to hunt me down were a mystery.

Adrik was long out of sight. Now, all I had to do was wait and pray none of my vitals got hit. This man was a perfect candidate to keep hostage, and, given that my man was nearby, the chances of me dying were not high. Or at least, that was what I hoped.

“Come out, come out, wherever you are, you bastard.”

Utter silence answered me.

“You have no sense of self-preservation.” An unknown voice brought my attention to the right.

He jumped out of the high tree, landing perfectly on his feet, unbothered. A gun in his hand was aimed at me, ready to shoot. The gun had a silencer on. I didn’t have enough time to position my gun, so I dropped it. Stalling him was the only way for me to survive until my man got here.

“It’s a pleasure to meet the woman who’s been giving us a headache for the past few years.”

I blinked. “Aren’t you too young to have been in this business for years?”

My voice was gradually getting louder, hoping it would bring Davorin to me quicker.
