I wasn’t going to stick around Los Angeles for too long. Instead of buying a house, I rented an apartment for two weeks. In fact, since I needed a lot of privacy, I rented the entire floor.

The building was owned by a man who lived overseas. Once I offered a lot of money to use the entire floor and the private elevator for a while, he didn’t ask too many questions. The first thing I did was get rid of the cameras, which were eventually going to be replaced and paid for by me.

I wasn’t an asshole, just in desperate need of uninterrupted privacy.

My father had made his move, and I was aware of that. Davorin sent his men to watch over me. I acted oblivious because as professional as they seemed, if I didn’t want to be caught, not even the most skilled person would catch me.

The moment he laid me in the bathtub after taking off my clothes, I was able to finally take a deep breath. He bathed me and washed my hair carefully. The water needed to be changed four times before all the blood was washed out.

“Your phone’s been buzzing for the past hour,” he told me grumpily. I threw him a glance and his mouth clamped shut.

Only Dominik had this new phone number.

Upon my departure from New York, I never planned on contacting my brothers again. However, plans changed. I wasn’t even out of the city before two of Bogdan’s men struck. I didn’t expect them, but I was trained well enough to take care of two pests.

Dominik was annoyed that they made their move that quickly, and he promised I wouldn’t have to worry about Father’s men again. True to his word, no one came directly after me. Davorin intercepted them whenever they got too close.

I could’ve disconnected the number after making that call, but, somehow, a part of me knew better than to kill the only line of communication, just in case.

Now, after months, Dominik was contacting me.

“Yes?”

“How have you been, Kaya?” Honesty laced his voice, yet I wasn’t swayed by his words.

“Good, what do you need?”

“Why would you—”

“I think we should skip this. It’s time consuming, but we both know you didn’t call me to chit-chat or catch up. What’s wrong?”

A chuckle came from him, and he ignored my words.

“Let’s just say that I need some information from you.”

“Of course. What do you need?”

He was silent for a couple of seconds, and I didn’t like it.

“Have you ever heard of a man who goes by the name of The Rapscallion?”

I paused. My eyes found the man behind me and with a wave of my hand, I kicked him out. Although he was confused, he didn’t utter a word. He knew better than that.

“I’ve met him a few times.”

Deadly silence followed. Dominik took in a sharp intake of breath. “And you didn’t think to tell anyone about that? Quickly, tell me everything you remember about him.”

A small smirk tugged on the corner of my lips. The Rapscallion was definitely not a man to cross. He was a criminal, but he was so high up that not even Bogdan or Aleksei were ever able to touch him. Whatever you needed done, he had people do it. From heists to killings. He was a contractor, of sorts, but a much more dangerous one since not just anybody got to see his face.

He lived in the shadows, thrived in the underworld, and kept himself hidden away.

And I got to see his face.

“He’s… dangerous.”

I could practically feel the eye roll. “His appearance, Ekaterina.”

My eyes were squeezed shut as I tried remembering it. It was around four years ago, and I hadn’t seen him since. “He’s… tall. He has heterochromia; one of his eyes was blue, the other one brown. Oh, he had a snake tattoo. The tail of the snake was wrapped around his left arm, and the snake’s head was right in the middle of his throat. He should be in his thirties, I think.”
