My body ached, and a light headache followed. It came and went in intervals, a dull, sharp pain I couldn’t get rid of. With a quick glance, I saw that it was a hospital room, and I was dressed in one of those ugly gowns.

It took me four tries to sit up straight; each time I found myself falling straight back down. A groan slipped, and I shook my head slightly. I lacked the strength to even move, and it was driving me nuts.

“How are you feeling?”

“Jesus Christ,” I muttered. My mouth was so dry, the words barely fell out. I hadn’t noticed him standing so close to me. I was too vulnerable and completely oblivious to my surroundings. My gaze wandered throughout the room, scanning the area, trying to find Adrik.

He was quick to grab a bottle of water, take the lid off, and place it to my lips. Room temperature water, as much as I hated it, tasted divine. I couldn’t get enough of it, greedily gulping down every single drop.

“Easy there.” The bottle vanished. “You’ll feel sick if you drink all of it.”

Adrik’s face was stoic, as it always was, but his eyes held worry, uncertainty, and suppressed rage. Yet, they provided the comfort and warmth I sought. That deep gaze spoke volumes, and words were unnecessary.

“Where is Rhea?”

The thought of her in such bad shape made my heart race. She’d been unconscious as Dominik brought her out of that hole, and the state of her foot was terrible.

“She’s resting now. She had surgery, but she’ll be fine.”

A sense of relief washed over me. Adrik was quick to fix the pillows behind me, and I lay back, closing my eyes briefly.

“What happened to that man?”

I peeked through my eyelashes and saw the lopsided smile tug on his mouth. He sensed my troublesome thoughts and was reluctant to speak. His mouth opened, then closed. I hadn’t realized that my body was trembling, but I brushed it off as being cold.

“Let’s just say there’s nothing for you to worry about.”

I didn’t press for more information. Distraction was all I needed, because when I closed my eyes, all I saw was that sinister look on his face. If Adrik and Ilya hadn’t arrived in time, things would’ve ended badly. Nausea rose in my throat at the thought of being violated further by that pest.

“Take me to see Rhea and Dominik.’’

I started to get up but was pushed back before I could sit up properly. Adrik nodded his head and left the room, leaving me confused. Soon enough, he returned with a wheelchair. While he was busy putting a pillow on the seat, I ripped out the IV that was in my vein, realizing that my hand was stone cold.

A few droplets of blood followed given the messy way I’d taken the needle out, but it stopped quickly.

A small squeal came from me once I felt Adrik’s hands beneath my body. He was careful, as if I were the most fragile doll, as he set me gently on the wheelchair. It was the middle of summer, but it didn’t stop him from covering me with a blanket. Just in case, he brought the bottle of water and pushed me out of the room.

Surprisingly, for a hospital, the hallway was almost too silent. The hall was long, yet wide. On the right side was a desk with a nurse behind it. The older woman looked like she would rather be anywhere but here, yawning a few times within minutes.

Then it clicked. It was the VIP section of the hospital. Money bought privacy, anonymity, and the best care. Though it was rather sad that it only took a swipe of a credit card for me to be taken care of as if I were a princess, whilst there were many people that could barely afford basic care.

Dominik and Ilya strolled through the door. They were speaking in Russian. They either conveniently forgot that both Adrik and I were fluent in the language, or they didn’t care. Given that two nurses followed silently behind, I assumed they didn’t want their murderous tendencies to be revealed to outsiders.

“Kaya,” Dominik greeted. Instantly, it was as if Ilya no longer existed. He was cut off mid-sentence, and his mouth shut once his boss averted his attention to me. “How are you feeling?”

My face matched my voice, both as flat as a board. “I’ve seen better days.”

Then, I tilted my head upwards, knowing that Adrik was already looking at me. “I need a word with my brother in private.”

He didn’t miss a beat. “I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

My eyes rolled on their own. “I’ll be with him. It’s not like I can go anywhere in this state.”

“You’re unpredictable.” He chuckled. “And vindictive. So no, I’m not leaving you for a single moment.”

As if Ilya and Dominik weren’t beside me, I slapped his hand away from my shoulder, narrowing my eyes at him. “What is your plan, exactly? Chain me up again till the day I die?”

“You did what?” Dominik’s voice was ignored.
