No one was inside, and it was too quiet. I made my way up towards Aleksei’s study, and I finally heard a sign of life.

The door was missing, and the state of his office resembled the rest of the house. The lights were out, and the brightness outside seemed to be Aleksei’s enemy, given that he had the curtains closed shut.

Never in a million years had I thought I would ever see a sight like this.

Viktor was sitting on a destroyed couch, balancing so as not to fall. He had an expression so blank, he almost looked annoyed. He was blinking rapidly, and I could’ve sworn he had yawned.

Dominik was in the corner, eyes on me as I stepped inside. He was a master of hiding his emotions, but I could see a flick of relief inside of his eyes when our gaze met. He sighed and raised his hand up, stopping me.

Then, my eyes landed on Aleksei.

His bloodshot eyes stared right at me. He was covered in dried blood, and I could barely suppress a gasp of surprise.

Across his eye was a nasty wound. It went from his eye down to his chest. I couldn’t see past that point. The bleeding had stopped, but it needed stitches, and even his eye was fucked up. His knuckles were wounded as well, though it seemed as if he wasn't in any pain.

“Where the fuck were you, Ekaterina?” Aleksei’s voice was calm, a total contrast to the expression on his face.

It was best for me to remain silent.

“I asked—” his voice gradually got louder, “where the fuck were you?”

He was shouting. I wasn’t the one to blame for what happened, but it seemed that, to this family, it had always been me who had to be used as a means to release their pent-up anger.

His gaze was intimidating, and I did my best to look him straight in the eyes, but I failed. A vein popped on his forehead, and the harsh movements made the wound on his face start bleeding again.

It pissed him off when I averted my eyes to the ground, not responding. I could hear his harsh breathing. The room filled with anger and the need for destruction. I didn’t need to look up to see that he had approached me. And then I felt a metal object touch the side of my head.

I closed my eyes.

“You should’ve been with her.” He spoke through gritted teeth. His voice was low but equally as dangerous.

Dominik was quick to be by my side, as well as Viktor, and that surprised me. It wasn’t a secret that my twin brother hated me, but he acted as if he was a loving brother.

“It’s not her fault, Aleksei.” Viktor tried reasoning with him. “Even if she was with Davina, this couldn’t have been prevented.”

Now, the gun was removed from my temple and placed on Viktor’s. He didn’t back down and stared right back at Aleksei with the same amount of venom lacing his expression.

Dominik took it as an opportunity to remove me from the situation. Without asking me, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of the room. He was quiet while he led me downstairs to the kitchen. It was one of the rooms that remained surprisingly intact during the whole ordeal.

“How did he get past security?” I asked.

Dominik sighed. “He didn’t. His name was on the list. Someone put it there, so he waltzed right in.”

I blinked, surprise in my voice when I spoke. “What? How is that even possible?”

“His name was the only one handwritten, and the handwriting matches Davina’s. She put him on the damn list, and I can’t find a connection between them.”

“How did she die?”

I wasn’t attached to Davina, by any means. I knew her fairly well, but not by my free will. Her being gone was only a menace simply because Aleksei would be in a foul mood for a long time. He was overly attached to her, despite her ignoring her feelings and never acting on them.

I meant all of that, but why did something twist inside of my chest? Something was wrong, as if my heart was in pain.

“Shot in the chest. Aleksei was on the other side of the room when it happened. The ambulance was called but by the time she got to the hospital, it was too late. The bullet grazed her heart, and it was enough for her to bleed out.”

“And the culprit?”

“Captured and tied up in the basement of my house. Aleksei is not in his right mind as of now, so I’m keeping him away. This will not go unpunished.”
