The disbelief in my tone matched the expression on my face. Carefully, Felix took a step back with an apologetic smile. He avoided my gaze, trembling slightly at the sight of my furious, uncontrollably angry state.

“Possession of marijuana and drunk driving.”

My eyes snapped shut.

A humorless, bitter laugh slipped past my lips. I couldn’t stop it from coming out, and Felix took another step back, bewildered at the reaction.

While I was busy trying to prevent anyone from harming her, she’d decided to get some weed and get drunk? I could feel my heartbeat speeding up at the mere thought of her manic laughter whilst being handcuffed.

The immense desire to put a hole into the nearest wall almost won, but I did my best to remain as calm and collected as possible. Not a day went by without Ekaterina making things ever more difficult for me. But this? This was the icing on the cake.

It’s been four fucking days since she arrived in Texas. Three days ago, both of the men I sent to watch over her became unreachable. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that she got rid of them. I overlooked even that, since she was more than capable of protecting herself.

Or so I thought.

Instead of keeping a low profile because of her father, she might as well have told the world where she was. He kept track of her and the moment she was arrested, he was informed of it. Now, even a jail cell was not a safe place for her.

“Also, she put your name as her contact, so you should probably go over there and pay the bail.”

Felix hurried out of the room the moment I looked at him. The last thing I needed was a twenty-year-old boy telling me how to handle things like this. Kaya was arrested once before, though that record was hard to find. I never, not in a million years, would’ve thought that such an intelligent person would act so stupid at times.

Everything in me screamed, telling me to go to her and fix her fucking attitude. But I couldn’t; not now, when Aleksei had called for a meeting. It fucking sucked having only one person that was semi-trustworthy, and that person was a kid who could die by tripping.

And I wasn’t exaggerating, either.

He broke his right arm because he tripped over his foot and fell down a flight of stairs. He even knocked out a tooth. If it weren’t for his skills in a different department, I wouldn’t have thought twice about getting rid of him.

At the moment, I had no other choice but to send Felix.

I called for him. Soon enough, with careful steps, he re-emerged into the other room. Although he was anxious, he managed to crack a semi-honest smile.

“You’re going to bail her out and stay with her until I get there.”

Felix froze. A nervous laugh slipped past his lips, though his face told me everything. He might’ve been afraid of me, but he knew that since I needed him, I wasn’t going to harm him just yet. Ekaterina, on the other hand, was a completely different story.

One wrong glance and he was dead.

He visibly winced, his hands trembling. “So, what do I do if I accidentally piss her off?”

I choked a bitter laugh. “My suggestion would be to not piss her off. Around her, it’s like you’re walking on mines. One wrong move and boom, you’re gone.”

I watched as the young boy pondered that information, thinking his options through. One of them was disobeying me and getting sent to prison. The other was dying before getting to see his twenty-first birthday. Neither of them were good choices. But given how easily I was getting ticked off lately, Kaya seemed like a safer option. For now.

“Fine.” He caved with a sigh of desperation, as if he’d hoped I would take pity on him. “I’ll go. What do you need me to do while I’m there?”

“You’ll be my eyes and ears. If you think, even for a second, that she’s about to do something stupid, call me.”

“All right, fine.”

Felix knew when not to push my buttons. It didn’t take him long to pack a bag and leave. In the meantime, I was mentally preparing myself for the damn meeting Aleksei had called for. Since he was the Pakhan, and, for the time being, I worked under him, I didn’t have the luxury of rejecting his invitation.

And it gave me access to his closest people. I didn’t trust Aleksei, but I trusted his greed for power and his hatred towards his father. He was going to do everything possible, even bend the whole world backward, if necessary, to kill that man.

The only downside was that, as of today, we still didn’t have the full list of Bogdan’s allies, nor his whereabouts. He was hiding behind his toys. As expected of someone who’d been dethroned that easily, he was gutless.

Aleksei’s mansion was empty. Quiet. Too quiet, almost. On the way to the secret meeting room on the top floor, I hadn’t seen a single person. Given the size of his home, he had people cleaning all day long, cooking, and keeping everything in check.

His office had a secret passage behind one of the cabinets. It was hidden in plain sight, which was why it was a perfect spot. It was so obvious that no one would actually move the cabinet with the expectations of finding a hidden room. And if, by luck, someone did find it, they needed a password to enter.
