They answered her by doing the same as Blaze. Kaida groaned, not liking that she could barely communicate through the bonds to know anything about what they planned to do. For all she knew, they had a plan and were leaving her out of it. Considering her power and magic were the keys to winning, she didn't know why they would leave her out of anything.

We can hear you, Beckett told her.

Kaida's jaw dropped, and they nearly fell down the stairs. Since when?

Since you came back with Blaze. Arlo told her. Must be something else your bonds with us can do. Now shut up and shift before these assholes show up.

Kaida growled at them. That would have been useful information!

None of them answered, so she shifted into her dragon. They stood at the cliff's edge, watching and waiting for the kingdom's army to descend from the clouds and begin the fight. Kaida could hear her heart pounding in her chest as she anticipated the attack.

He isn't going to attack head-on, her dragon's voice rang through her head.

Kaida turned around and noticed clouds were lower than usual and covering her visibility of the town. She watched in horror as dragons appeared suddenly amongst lightning strikes like they rode the bolts as they rained upon the land. Kaida roared and took flight immediately as the others turned to see what she had witnessed. The sounds of bodies colliding with one another, roars, snarls, and cries of pain filled her ears as the wind rushed across her body, flying as fast as she could into the battle. The Storm Dragons' clouds were lit up with patches of orange flames and light blue from ice, giving her some hope that the Islanders were fighting back instead of being slaughtered.

Her mouth opened, and the building of her purple plasma illuminated the area as a large Storm Dragon burst through the cloud and aimed his flight pattern toward her. Without hesitation, she pushed her blast of magic at the dragon's snout and watched his scales and skin peel away as she flew past the body. The dragon fell below the cloud, and she heard the thud of its body hitting the ground below. The cloud he formed with his magic disappeared, giving away the positions of others. The islanders fighting the kingdom's army noticed the coverage depleted and quickly regained the upper hand as Elemental magic was thrown through the air. The Storm Dragons had no chance as they were struck with the attacks, and the battle in the small patch of land had been won.

If this was how the army would fight, Kaida knew she was needed wherever she saw a cloud, not where it should be. If she could dismember the opponent creating the coverage, the Islanders would regain the upper hand and could win. She looked around, and the clouds shrouded every section of the island.

Ugh. And here I thought it would be easy.

Then, something struck her stomach from below, knocking her body off course and making her lose her focus. Kaida leaned her body backward into a back flip and recovered to find Gemar's dragon flying away and shooting arcs of lightning into the clouds around the island. Kaida went to follow him, but Enzo's voice slid into her mind.

Don't you dare go after him yourself!

He is right there! Why shouldn't I?

She noticed a figure above her and saw Enzo's dragon form in a fight with another Storm Dragon. He had the dragon's neck in his jaws, using his hind legs to try to slice open its stomach. The dragon wasn't going down without a fight and used its arcs of lightning spilling out of his mouth to keep Enzo's feet away. Kaida shot a beam of plasma at the dragon, scorching his underbelly. Enzo used the dragon’s daze to his advantage and finally connected his claws to split open the stomach. Kaida moved out of the way just in time for the dragon’s blood and innards to fall from the sky, and the dragon's body fell after Enzo let it go.

He always has something up his sleeve! We will keep the battle from turning and let my father drain his energy. Then, we will all face him together.

Kaida could see why they would think that was a good plan, but she knew better. That was exactly what Gemar would expect them to do. She needed to face him when he thought he was safe to throw him off his plan like she did while at the castle.

Enzo engaged with another dragon flying her way in the same fashion he did with the last. She used him being distracted to fly after Gemar. She lost him through the clouds and knew it was too risky to go inside of it to chase him. While flying above them, she could see how the magic was warped to make everyone think the clouds were all shrouding the whole area. From above, she could see how the Storm Dragons were manipulating it to look that way, but instead, it was just around the single dragon. There were patches of clear land with no clouds over it. Some people were fighting in their human forms with other humans on the ground. Kaida did not know the army would do such a thing when they had a powerful beast inside them that could do more damage. She didn't ask questions. She needed to locate Gemar and kill him so the battle would end.

He is using his ability. Can't you feel the thrum of his magic? It's different than the others.

When her dragon pointed it out, Kaida noticed what she meant. There was something different about Gemar's magic than the others. There was a darker element to it. It was slicker and tasted wrong. Storm Dragon's magic usually tasted like ozone. Right now, too much of that flavor coated her tongue and nose due to the battlefield being riddled with Storm magic. She could scent others, too, but not in as big batches as the Storm Dragon.

Kaida scanned the battlefield to find her mates. Each one was engaged in a battle with an opponent, and they were doing an excellent job. She noticed a deep gash on Blaze's hind leg, scorched scales on Arlo, and a trickle of blood down Esen's shoulder. Beckett and Enzo were too far away, but if they had a wound, she couldn't see it.

So, she went back to focusing on Gemar.

The clouds were thickening up around the Storm Dragons using that tactic. Kaida flew toward it, blasting beams of her plasma energy at the cloud to hit the kingdom's army and then move on. Her dragon urged her to keep moving so she wouldn't be a sitting target. Whenever someone from the army noticed she was coming, their efforts to attack her became their mission. Thankfully, it allowed the Islanders to disarm their opponents long enough to get the upper hand. She thought her plan was solid until another attack got the best of her. This time, it was from above.

Lightning connected with her back. The energy surged through her body, and she let out an enraged roar. Gemar's dragon flew off while she recovered, but it was difficult for her to regain speed. Her muscles were tight, and her wings didn't want to flap. She felt her energy drain as she tried to keep herself in the air.

He is a Storm Dragon. The air is his domain, and we need to get him to the ground.

Kaida agreed and did her best to fly after Gemar. A thought occurred to her, and she wondered if Gemar would fall for it. She felt the bonds of her mates sending strength and power her way, relieving her muscles and tired wings of their pain. They heard her dragon, and they agreed with her.

By tucking her wings into her body, Kaida fell from the sky faster as her body cut through the air. She was close to the ground before she spanned out her wings to stop her. A quick look around told her she was where she fought off the Dark Dimension. A brief scan of feeling for the dimension's power had her sigh in relief when she couldn't sense it. If she planned to bring Gemar here, the last thing they needed was for Gemar to gain power from the dimension during their fight.

The sound of powerful wings above her made her span out her wings and flap them slowly. She lowered her head onto the ground and groaned. The wings flapped less, but the sound of it grew closer. Kaida tucked her wings in and lowered her stomach onto the ground. The scent of ozone and oil filled her nose, and a wave of power rushed through the air. A throaty chuckle was several feet away, and Kaida let out another sigh and heaved her body to imitate her trying to get away. She pulled her magic inward and allowed her dragon to sit still while Gemar stepped closer.

"You are a poor, stupid child. I tried to warn you that fighting me would be futile." He paused, and she could feel his eyes on her. "All the textbooks indicate how powerful a plasma dragon is, but I don’t see what they are talking about. Even at the castle, I could feel your weakness. I felt power only when you made that final attack to get away. That must have used up much of your power if a simple lightning strike can disarm your magic."

Kaida pulled in her dragon to allow the shift back to take over. Her dragon did it reluctantly, wanting to bite Gemar while he was in human form. The reminder of needing to use her magic is the only reason her dragon allowed for the shift. Kaida rolled herself into the fetal position and kept her eyes away from Gemar. Inside the bonds, she could feel her mates panic. She pushed her plan through to give them her ideas of how to attack. She could feel them nearby, but they waited in the shadows.
