It’s your turn now, Juliette.

Just kidding, I don’t want to wait until tomorrow to find a note from you. Text me when you get home.

A soft laugh left my lips as I shook my head and tucked his note into my pocket. I glanced over my shoulder as I unlocked my door, hoping that maybe he was standing there, but he wasn't. Slipping inside my condo, I pulled my phone out and found the message thread between us. My fingers tapped on the screen while my heart beat erratically in my chest. I hated the effect he had on me while loving it at the same time.

He made me feel such conflicting things, and I knew nothing good would ever come from any of this.

Juliette

I got the note you left. Welcome home.

Mac

Come over and welcome me home yourself.

I stared at my phone with my feet cemented to the floor as I read his message a second time. Then a third time. The words didn’t change. They stared back at me, taunting me. I knew better than to get involved with someone like him. Mac Sullivan was everything I did and didn’t want.

Juliette

Give me twenty minutes.

Mac

I’ll be waiting for you.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

MAC

Thor grunted as he rolled onto his back on the couch beside me. I looked over at him and scratched his stomach as he pushed his black nose against my thigh. A soft knock sounded from my door and Thor’s body wiggled as he rolled onto the floor and galloped across the living room. Excitement rippled through me and my footsteps were light as I followed after him.

I was definitely playing with fire.

I didn’t expect Juliette to take the bait. I imagined she would tell me to fuck off when I told her to come over, but she surprised me and agreed.

Consequences be damned—I wanted her and I was done denying myself of the simple pleasures in life.

Her gray eyes met mine as I pulled open the door and found her standing in the hall. She was wearing a pair of black yoga pants, an oversized crewneck hoodie, and her damp hair was pulled back in a braid. Face free of makeup, she was absolutely breathtaking.

“Hey,” I said softly, as I pushed Thor back with my leg and held the door open for her. “I wasn’t sure you were going to come over.”

Torment flickered in her eyes. “I probably shouldn’t have.”

I tilted my head to the side. “I have no expectations, Juliette. I just wanted to see you.”

“Why would you want to see me, Mac?” She closed the distance between us until her toes reached mine. Her braid fell down her back as she lifted her chin to look at me. “Why me?”

Her questions were unexpected. There was conflict woven within her expression and I wasn’t sure where it was coming from. She was off-limits to me, so if there was anyone who should feel conflicted here, it shouldn’t have been her. I should have closed the door in that moment and erased her from my mind, but I couldn’t.

“Because I can’t get you out of my head. No matter what I do to try and forget about you, you’re still there. My thoughts continuously circle back to you.” I swallowed roughly, running a frustrated hand through my hair. An exasperated sigh escaped me as I stared into the burning flames in her irises. “I’m not allowed to have you, and that only makes me want you more.”

Juliette lifted up onto the balls of her feet as she slid her hands around the back of my head. There was no hesitation as she pulled my face down to hers, our mouths colliding. Her lips were soft like butter melting against mine. Instinctively, I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her body closer. Moving my feet, I spun her around and began to walk her into my place while I kicked the door shut behind us.

“We shouldn’t be doing this,” she whispered against my lips.

“Shh.” I nipped at her bottom lip. “You’re not the one who could lose everything.”

“That’s exactly why we should stop.”
