I turned back to look at him. “What?”

“I know what you’re doing, dude.”

Wes looked back and forth between me and Lincoln. “Okay, I’m missing something. Who wants to clue me in?” His eyes landed on me, and I watched them widen as realization dawned on him. “Are you seeing someone?”

“Not really. It’s just for a friend.”

“Where does your friend live, Mac?” Lincoln questioned me with accusations heavy in his voice. This motherfucker didn’t miss a single thing. He had vouched for me before when Nico jumped down my throat, but that nice side of his was clearly gone.

I hesitated too long and he shook his head.

“Juliette.”

“Who’s that?” Wes asked with a look of confusion washing over his expression. “Wait, is that Coach Anderson’s daughter?”

I groaned and ran a frustrated hand down my face. “Fine. Yes, it’s for her.”

“Bro. You weren’t supposed to get attached, remember?”

I glared at him. “Who the hell said I was attached?”

“Did you fuck her?” Wes chimed in with amusement dancing in his eyes.

“Fuck you, Cole.”

Lincoln’s eyes widened. “Oh my god. You did. And now you’re in love with her.”

“You’re insane,” I said, laughing off his words. “She likes to read. Fucking sue me for wanting to get her a book.”

“Okay, but just listen,” Lincoln started as he began to walk again. Wes stepped over to his car. “You said if you fucked her, you wouldn’t get caught. If you end up getting attached to her, she becomes a liability. Are you following what I’m saying?”

I stared at him for a moment. “So, by giving her a book, I’m somehow going to shoot myself in the foot?”

Wes unlocked his car, deciding to dip out of the conversation. “On second thought, I think I’d rather deal with Charlotte’s wrath right now. If you need a book, let me know.”

“Not helping, Cole,” Lincoln grumbled as Wes simply smiled and got into his car. Lincoln turned back to me. “Do whatever you want, Mac. It doesn’t change anything between you and me. I just don’t want to see you have your career in jeopardy because you can’t keep your dick in your pants.”

We both paused, glancing to the right as Wes pulled his car out of his parking spot and beeped at us before he drove out of the lot. I was a bit jealous of him. I wasn’t so sure I wanted to go get drinks with Lincoln if he was going to try to be the voice of reason I didn’t need.

“I didn’t sleep with her and if I did, it doesn’t matter. We’re just friends.”

Lincoln shook his head. “Lie to yourself all you want, Mac. Just be careful, okay? You’re not stupid, even if you are being an idiot right now.”

“There’s nothing to worry about,” I told him dismissively as I tried to divert the conversation away from Juliette. “Now, are we going to go get drinks or are we going to stand in the parking lot for you to continue scolding me?”

“I won’t bring it up again,” Lincoln promised, holding up his fingers like a Boy Scout.

“That’s the best thing you’ve said all night.”

Lincoln rolled his eyes at me. “I’ll meet you at Mirage.”

“The club?”

A sinister smirk pulled on his lips. “Yep. We’re going to find you someone else to occupy your time with instead of our coach’s daughter.”

“So, Lincoln told me that you guys play hockey together?”

I spun my drink in my hand on the bar and turned to Mia, the girl with black hair sitting next to me. She was friends with the girl Lincoln was talking to. I glanced at him over her shoulder and he nodded.
