“Glad to hear it,” I said with a snarky tone as I finally turned away from him. The last thing I needed was someone like Mac Sullivan under my skin. Hockey players weren’t my type, especially cocky ones who were overly sure of themselves like him. The air sizzled between us and the tension was palpable. My feet carried me closer to the door as I put as much distance between us as possible.

“Hey,” Mac called out after me as I reached for the door. “I didn’t get your name…”

I didn’t chance a glance back in his direction. I didn't need to see his perfect white smile and chiseled jaw. I didn’t need those clear blue eyes searching mine.

“Because I didn’t tell you and you don’t need to know it.”

CHAPTER THREE

MAC

It was late at night by the time I got back to my condo building. After the game, a few of us went and got drinks before going our separate ways. I had a bit of a buzz, but I wasn’t drunk. As the elevator reached my floor and I stepped out, I came to a halt, my feet unmoving as I stared down the hall. Just across from my door was someone sitting outside of the other condo. Her dark hair was pulled up in a messy bun on top of her head and she was sitting cross-legged with her back against the door. My eyebrows scrunched in confusion, but I slowly began to approach.

And then I realized who it was.

Coach Anderson’s daughter.

“Hey,” I said softly as I stopped directly in front of her. She caught me off guard. I hadn’t seen her since the family skate… and I wasn’t expecting to find her in the hallway of my condo building. “Whatcha doing down there?”

She lifted her head abruptly, her eyes widening as they met mine in a rush. “You again. What are you doing here?”

A chuckle escaped me and I pointed to the door behind me. “I live here. What exactly are you doing here, and why are you sitting on the floor?”

“Shit,” she murmured and shook her head before tilting it back to lean against the door. “I just moved in, like, two days ago and I already locked myself out.”

“Do I even want to ask how you managed to do that?”

She let out a sigh and straightened her head as she looked back at me. “I’d rather you didn’t.”

“You don’t have a spare key anywhere?”

She shook her head. “I called the property manager. They’re supposed to be sending someone out within the next few hours.”

I glanced at the watch on my wrist. “It’s already after midnight.”

“Yeah, I know,” she said as her shoulders sagged with slight defeat. “It’s fine. I’m the one who locked myself out, so I don’t mind waiting for them.”

I studied her for a moment as she picked at her cuticles. “Come hang out at my place until they come.”

She raised an eyebrow at me. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m fine waiting here.”

I shrugged and dropped down onto the floor across from her. If she wanted to be stubborn, two could play that game.

“What are you doing?”

A smirk pulled on my lips and I blinked at her. “Waiting with you. Who knows who the hell they’re sending here in the middle of the night. I’ll stay until you’re in your condo safely.”

“You don’t have to do that,” she said softly as warmth flooded her eyes.

My smirk turned into a smile and I nodded. “I know, but if you don’t want to come and wait at my place, then I’ll stay out here.”

She stared at me for a moment as if she were weighing the options. I didn’t want her sitting out in the hallway waiting for some stranger to show up. I knew I was equally a stranger to her, but I was the safer option. I just wanted her to have somewhere to sit instead of the dirty floor in the hallway.

“Fine, I’ll come to your place,” she said after the silence stretched between us. She climbed to her feet and I followed suit. “But don’t get any ideas.”

I couldn’t help but laugh as I turned and slid the key into the lock of my door. “I would never.”

She snorted as I unlocked the door.
